I used to think that too, and I still do to a certain extent, but the Stonewall Defense has been played by Kramnik, and is eminently playable. Just don't think of it as an easy way out of learning openings. The ideas on the white and black side are not as simple as "How to Think Ahead in Chess" would make you believe.
Thinking of picking up the stonewall

I tried the wall as a defence to 1.d4 for a few months back when I was just starting out and now it makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. (or was that the chili I just had a couple of hours ago?)
Anyhow, personally I think you are better off finding a more open defense against 1.d4. (and you are thinking of playing it as white! :( ...why torture yourself and the person you are playing?) The stonewall leads to a closed center with play on the flanks, not really ideal for club players seeking to improve.
For BOTH black and white... of course only when not against e4 or f4.
For now, I'm using just e4, but I like the feel of the stonewall.
Thoughts? Ideas? Condemnations? Crucifixions?
