Here is a game we played in the Rb8 variation.  Black has the advantage after the 11.d3 blunder.

What do you  think should be done about Rb8?  I think it may be strongest for black.

So far Conquiscador and I have tried a couple of move orders in the variation 8.Qf3 Be7 9.Be2 O-O 10.h4

Conquistador

I seriously underestimated white's attack in that line.  As anti-positional h4 is in this position, the pressure is certainly impressive.

Black should just decline the knight as in our current game Richard.

Conquistador

I will see if I can come up with a more resilient defense for black in your line.  Nice find!

For what it's worth, that knight sac is a very old one (as I'm sure you are aware) and is usually not a great place to put a knight if it isn't captured.

I think this is why original 8. Qf3 IS BADDDDDD....

The second game shows the practical difficulties facing Black. No refutation, but it gets very complicated very quickly.

The next test is 8.Qf3 Rb8 9.Be2---Conquisdador?

Conquistador

One more test of your h4 idea, then we can move onto Rb8.

Conquistador

I think I might have an anwser.

8.Qf3 Be7 9.Be2 0-0 10.h4 Bg4!?

sloughterchess

Interesting.

Hi Conquiscator!

I accidentally deleted the 8.Qf3 Rb8 challenge---please resubmit; I don't know how and got colors reversed. Clearly 8.Qf3 Be7 9.Be2 O-O 10.h4 Bg4 needs retesting.

The 8.Qf3 line doesn't seem to offer White any better chances than the 8.Be2 lines; most variations look pretty balanced. The one variation I thought White could demonstrate a plus doesn't look very promising after all. I thought, initially, that in the 8...cxb5 variation that White's big material edge could be used to stiffle the initiative, but as Fritz has demonstrated, it is not what comes off the board that matters, it is what stays on the board. Black gets very active minors as compensation for the exchange. Here, I just take a draw by repetition because there doesn't seem to be any way for White to achieve a plus. I've looked at these variations in great detail and White is never able to maintain a plus; typically Fritz says big advantage White, but then White's "advantage" just slips away for no apparent reason.

This was played at game in 5.

The 8...Be7 variation offers a lot of scope for original play. This was played at 480'99. Black may have slightly the better of it but it is clearly complicated enough to make it playable for both sides.

kco

is this an another chesstrainer whatever his name was ?

The 8...h6 line doesn't appear to equalize for Black. At 480'99 against Fritz 12,

White seems to have a slight plus:
