I got it wrong. I think I found an alternate solution. I played e6 for my first move instead of e5.
Also, it could be argued that white's second move was quite the best option. I can see one or two different moves that would have prolonged mate.

Impossible, as the only pieces that can move without any pawn moves having been made are knights, and they could not give check to an enemy king 8 files away in one move.

really? I just see that black will be a half tempo up in development and will be at least completely fine if not slightly better.
