Unorthodox Opening - 1.f3

Sort:
billwall

I like to experiment with unorthodox openings when playing on the Internet.  It gets out of book fast and there are always new ideas and new variations to play.  One of the openings I like to experiment with is 1.f3.  This is known as Barnes Opening or Gedult Opening or Gunderam Opening or Walkering Opening.  One experiment is for me to get the king out early and break all the rules about king safety.  For example, here is one of my game. 1.f3 e5 2.Kf2 Bc5+ 3.e3 Qf6 4.Nc3 Nh6 5.Nd5 Qd6 6.Bc4 c6 7.Nc3 Qf6 8.Ne4 Qf5 9.Nxc5 and I won,  Wall-Barak, Internet 1999.  Another idea is to play 1.f3, then 2.Nh3.  Here is an example.  1.f3 e5 2.Nh3 Nc6 3.e4 g6 4.Bc4 Nh6 5.d3 a5 6.Bg5 Ne7 7.Bf6 Rg8 8.Ng5 c6 9.Nxh7 b5 10.Bxe5 bxc4?? 11.Nf6 mate  Wall-Pac, 1998.  Another idea is to play 1.f3 and 2.c3.  Here is an example.  1.f3 d5 2.c3 d4 3.cxd4 Qxd4 4.e3 Qh4+ 5.g3 Qf6 6.d4 e5 7.dxe5 Qxe5 8.Nc3 Bb4 9.Nge2 Qf5 10.Bg2 g5 11.Qd4 Qf6 12.Qxb4 and I won  Wall-Giving, Internet 2004.  You can always play 1.f3 and 2.c4 and make it an English Opening.  Here is an example.  1.f3 c5 2.c4 d6 3.Nc3 e6 4.e4 e5 5.Bd3 Nc6 6.Nge2 Nf6 7.O-O d5 8.cxd5 Nb4 9.Bb5+ Bd7 10.d3 a6 11.Bxd7+ Qxd7 12.a3 and I win a piece, Wall-Guest6784, Internet 2005.  Against 1.f3 d5, White can play 2.e4.  For example, 1.f3 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Nc3 exf3 4.Nxf3 Bg4 5.Bc4 e6 6.d4 c5 7.d5 exd5 8.Bxd5 Qc8 9.Bxf7+ Ke7 10.Qe2+ Be6 11.Bxe6 Qxe6 12.Nd5+ Kd7 13.Qxe6+ Kxe6 14.Nc7+  1-0  Gedult-Beaudrionnet, Paris 1969.  Of course the move to avoid is 1.f3 e5 2.g4?? Qh4 mate.

Would be nice if you can post the game in the chess board format.

But that would require 6 or more boards on this article.  The openings or games are so short you can play it on a set or almost in your head in one minute.  I may add a pgn file of these and more 1.f3 examples in the downloads section.
Prodigy
well if you put it in board format you can always put in the variations.

I had already heard about this theory of using the king as an attacking piece, I did already try in a memorable game (one of my 3 best games ever) where I lost, but a very honorable a extremely tight loss, however I didnt get my king out at the beginning, just happened that it was convenient to use it to defend a piece, and so I remembered it and made me try it further, interesting, but very risky and quite too hard to use in challenging games in amateur level, maybe even in pre-GM level, for all I know...
