Some so called unorthodox openings are good, but just unfashionable. I think a good example is 1. e4 Nc6 - Nimzovich Defense. In my long tournament career (not stellar, but I get points for longevity) I have encountered several over 2000 rated USCF players who play this opening and know it inside out. You often get positions that are similar to the French.
