Hello,

to give the Petroff a try I will appreciate if you could post some links for me where I can find examples and variations of this defence in this forum or elsewhere. Haven`t find any explanation of the different lines in this forum lately.

Thanx in advance. :-))

Artur Jussupow has played this over 100 times with black. Also Shirov has played this over 50 times with white. Might be interesting to just go through a few games, and it might be useful to search chessbase for articles from top GMs whom have written a thing or two about this system. Or just make it easy and purchase a book from a well known author.

Speaking as one that has the Petroff in my repertoire as well, here's your answer to everything!  I saw your flag said Germany, so I am directing you to the German site:

the cochrane is ok but not going to do as well as the main line

It depends on what your goal is. Do you want an interesting/exciting game, or do you want to settle down in your rocker on the front porch and grumble about all those teenagers and how "A draw was always good enough for us back in our day!"

correct. if you want an interesting game you should play the main line. white is mainly hoping to draw with the cochrane.

White does not play the Cochrane hoping to draw; your suggestion is hard to take seriously, given the complexity of the gambit. There are easier ways -- much easier -- to draw against the Petrov. In the grand ol' (i.e. pre-engine) days of CC the Cochrane Gambit was a thing of violent beauty, employed without any mercy.

There would be less to discuss otherwise; his posts have not been empty fluff.

steve_bute would have gotten it right if he had said:
ghostofmaroczy applied a little math:

ghostofmaroczy
Fiveofswords is talking about fluffiness:

clearly ghost of maroczy's posts about the frequency and fluffiness of my posts are not the fluff posts in this thread. clearly.

@ghostofmaroczy ... You appear to have some sort of emotional issue, or perhaps something more serious that requires medical or psychotherapeutic attention. I doubt that anything or anyone in this thread will be of help, so you should seek assistance elsewhere.

What is the best progression for black if white plays 5.d3 to scare away the Knight ? In the latest games I saw this often.

steve_bute embarrassed himself:

steve_bute used a quadruple negative typical of a braindead person:

5. d3 is an obviously bad move.  It does not lose--it just gives less winning chances.

thats just a transposition to a french exchange.

True, but in the French Exchange most Black players go for an unbalanced approach, i.e. if White puts a N on f3 Black will usually deploy his KN to e7 and put a pawn on f6.  Black having committed to ..Nf6 gives White some chances for a initiative based on a quick Ne5.  Also, if Black plays ..Bg4 White might launch a spike with h3 + g4.

The first player doesn't have a significant advantage, but it is an interesting weapon to use as an alternative to going into Petroff lines, where White doesn't have much of an advantage either.

icyviper,

That's the Cozio Attack by White. 365chess shows that after 7...Qe7, 67% of those games end in draws.
