And what ?

It's just a question.  With his high rating... I suppose... he can give advises himself. lol  Not to refer to his coach.

@Hadron "What I believe is the Vienna Gambit" is the Vienna Gambit, so listed in ECO (C29). The fact that it's unwise to accept it doesn't alter the name. The Queen's Gambit is not a true gambit come to that, but the name is agreed by all chessplayers.

"F.C.F.F!" reporting in on the conversation! Apparently a small majority of the users who posted here prefer the Vienna more and that's only by one vote! As well some here say that the Vienna is more tactical, while others say that the Kings gambit is more sharp. Over all though, the best advice given here by a few users, is to play what you enjoy to play! This is "F.C.F.F!" reporting in! Alright before we turn this sound wave to our next story, we here at F.C.F.F want to say that if you want to know what's going on around Chess.com easier, then come join us to find out what might interest you easier! Alright folks, thanks for listening!, we here all hope our listeners are having a great night! On to our next story.......

Really? You are going to debate semantics? I don't really want to bore the other followers of this thread but i will oblige. I have ECO Volume C and pages 144 through 147 do NOT highlight what you BELIEVE is being the Vienna Gambit as being as such.

So giving you the benefit the doubt, I checked "The Complete Vienna" by G.M Mikhail Tseitlin and Igor Glazkov. There they refer to 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 as the "Classical line" (Chapter 8) and 2...Nc6 3.f4 as the Gambit (Chapter 4)

Further, Chapter 7 of GM Lanes book "Vienna Game" starts of..."The idea of playing a King's Gambit with 2.Nc3 Nc6 thrown in has attracted players of the white pieces for over a century".

Finally page 462 of  "The Oxford Compainion to Chess 1996 gives "The Vienna Gambit, 613, The King's Gambit move Pf2-f4, played in the Vienna Game after 2....Nc6.

but are you wrong? I would say yes and no. You offer a bold claim that based on 3 pages from ECO that the moves you believe to be the Vienna Gambit is the Vienna Gambit. I have a copy of this tome and you claim is not supported. As contradictory as it sounds, it does not make you wrong either. 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 is a gambit, with that you are correct, just not what is considered as thee Vienna gambit.

Have a nice day.

As far as I know, nobody is in charge of chess terminology. Is it a surprise if there is some variation from one source to another?
