On another thread in the general forum someone mentioned that if you "embraced the darkside openings" you could raise your rating by 200 points.

First of all, what are "darkside openings?"

And how do they help you raise your rating?

Perplexed.

Anyone who thinks punctuation isn't important, here's your wake up call.

"embrace the darkside openings" vs. "embrace the darkside, openings".

The exact quote from that forum was "embrace the darkside (openings) ...

Now I have studied Carl Jung, and I realize it is important for each of us to embrace his "darkside," but what has that got to do with chess and chess openings????

In this case the parenthesis do the same thing as the comma, just with lesser emphasis. The word "openings" simply explains what is meant by the darkside. The word "darkside" is not a modifier to the word openings. The original post was not indicating that some openings can be classified as darkside openings. He's suggesting that memorizing openings is the darkside of chess.

I hope that clears up the grammatical confusion. We have a whole other problem if you don't know the meaning of the allusion to the darkside.

I know what Jung meant by the darkside, but please be kind enough to explain what the darkside of chess is.

That is exacly what I meant Loomis (I was the one who posted the stuff about the darkside) I apologize for my poor grammer... Perhaps I should lay off the chess metaphors all together?

I actually think your grammar "embrace the darkside (openings)" is fine. I don't know how stwils got it mistranslated to "embrace the darkside openings". I guess he doesn't care for parenthesis.

Darkside of chess= studying openings >>>>Dedicating time to study opening play and opening preparation, working on traps as well as opening lines and variations. (I hope this is clear enough)

zxb995511, say a bit more about what you meant. I don't get the allusion to the darkside as far as chess is concerned.

 I thought this was hortatory.

Studying chess openings for people that have not yet achived a chess title (i.e. anything less than Master level) has always been somewhat of a chess taboo. It is widely considered that if such players (those that have not achived Master level) study openings they will have "artificial" chess knowledge in a way. They will be able to raise rating points quickly but WILL EVENTUALLY REACH A WALL until they focus on and study all the other aspects of chess. That is why it can be said that studying openings is the "darkside of chess".

How can studying openings raise your raiting so quickly?- Since others of your same level do not study openings they will be caught off guard with a good opening trap or a line that gives you very good advantage which will in turn help you beat almost any player at that level and you will gain points!

No problem this whole thing was my fault to begin with! I shall be laying off the chess metaphors from now on...(or at least include a good interpretation of it with correct grammar)

All who study chess openings are cheaters.

All chessplayers study openings.

Therefore, all chessplayers are cheaters.

Any good Jedi chess player knows that dark-side openings are any starting move other than pushing the Queen's pawn forward two squares.  All Queen pawn openings are light-side openings.

May d4s be with you.
