You're missing my point, I'm talking about the choices black have. As black you can surely generate a lot of active play if you wish however OP sought a passive closed game (in fact:  he wants white to be barely able to move a single piece) and would welcome the exchange variation for this reason,  contrary to some french players who find it frustrating though it is not risky for them.

First off, the OP has not been here for years, and it was like 8 to 9 years ago.

Second, he asked about closed, not dull.  Not the same thing.

Third, it was not Black's choice alone that insanity occurred.  In fact, there is no way to totally force a lack of action.  Even 6.Bxe7 instead of 6.h4 can be crazy, but 6.h4 tends to be crazier.

Fourth, even in ultra-closed positions, like the Advance French, the most closed of all French lines along with the Winawer, there is no way for White to not have active moves.

All closing the center does is move the action to the wings.

Your statement that the French is a boring, closed position just goes to show what little you know, and then to say that action is avoided with 1.d4 is also utter stupidity.  Just because the London System or Colle System do not lead to chaos in the first 10 moves of the game like the Latvian Gambit may does not make chaos avoidable.

And the French is no different.  For White to get an advantage in the French, he must close the center as there is no advantage after 3.exd5, but that does not mean there is no action.  The board is 8 files wide, not 2, and white has tons of activity in the French, especially on the f-, g-, and h-files!  There are even some rare cases that he gets queenside play, particularly down the c-file, or a passed a-pawn.

I concur that its much easier to force opening an position than closing it. Even in defenses known for going toward closed manuevering positions, white can almost always at least create a semi-closed like position.

often what happens is, that  you will have to  play something that tempts your opponent to close the position up to get advantage. White gets first move advantage but you get to play in positions you like, even if they may take a little longer to equalize. For example, for white to claim significant first move advantage in the french, he has to enter closed territory. One reason i like the nimzowitsch defense and Owen's defense so much is similar reasons, the objectively best lines for white require closed positions which black is happy to oblige in. (and unlike the french, the more open variations are not symmetrical)

if you want closed...nothing is as annoying as the stonewall. i hate it. it locks my pieces behind pawns where i can't get tactical. i used to close the queenside in most of my games unless my opponent queenside castled where a queenside pawnstorm is called for, but keeping the center closed is the whole point of that system
