What do you do as black against uncommon non-e4/d4 openings?

Like for openings you haven't prepared against; like b3, d3, f4 - do you try to do moves that look good, or do you just use a defence you're comfortable with?

I'm just a beginner so I've only really prepared against e4/d4 and sometimes c4 which is 95% of the openings I face as black. and if they move the knight then I attack the center square that they're intending to push (if Nc3 then e4, if Nf3 then d4).

Would you say it is worth learning openings against non-conventional openings like larsen attack (d3) or bird opening (f4), or just learn a solid all-around black opening that doesnt heavily rely on white's moves (would modern defense qualify?)

i personally am too weak to answer but i dont think so, i think general chess knowledge you pick up along mainstream openings and general concepts should be enough to face it. but as i said im probably not in the position to answer that. but that would be my guess, even though i think it wouldnt hurt to learn that as well

Thanks. Well I was wondering if there were any openings that play somewhat of a waiting move and if white plays a more familiar move then it could transpose into a familiar opening. Does modern defense, french defence, pirc defence fall under this category

EDIT: What do people think of the Hippo opening as black?

It depends a little. If the opponent is not occupying the centre you might be able to pull off e5 and d5 and then you're usually fine. 1.f4 is a little different since that occupies the centre and it isn't that uncommon of an opening. Normal is 1...d5 (reversed Dutch idea) or the gambit 1...e5. (From)

When in doubt against some d4 or c4 opening I usually would play the King's Indian since that mostly works and beginners can't do much about that anyway.

Do you play against 1.e4 e5? Then I would go for the Froms Gambit, too. And after 2.fxe5 I play Nc6. Its a sideline.

But White could play 2.e4 tranposing to KG.

man my memory is really bad i dont know where i saw the idea, so i dont if its really working. i just wish i could remember.

there is an idea against the stonewall. where white exchanges the bishop.

well my first thought was why didnt i have the idea it seems obvious.

well i dont know how good the strategy is,because i really cant remember the source.

but if its good it proves that with general knowlege and a bit of thinking, the uncommon openings are easy to play when you dont play a top player. maybe thats also the reason they are not so common (well ofc they properly have lots of other flaws as well). Unless they are the crazy stuff like albins counter gambit.
