I really like e5.Game becomes more tactical and you dont need you know lot of theory like sicilian!

I play e5 and these defenses againt these opennings:!

king' gambit => falkbeer counter gambit

danish gambit =>d5 line

ruy lopez => berlin defense or sometimes janisch gambit

Italian game(Bc4) => two knight defense ulvestad variation

of course you should know how to play against scotch game and scotch gambit(pretty easy)

I had great succsuus with this repertoire

e5, Philidor defense

DrSpudnik

I thought the Yugoslav was a White attack against the Dragon?

And that gambit is lame. 4.Nxd4 and Black has no fun.

Against 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 I like to play:

* Latvian gambit
* Elephant gambit
* Traxler counterattack

Against 1.e4 e5 2.f4 there's plenty of King's Gambit variations that I can appreciate.

It took me a while to realize there's no point playing the Sicilian when you're below 2000. Most people will reply 2. Bc4 or some other uncommon move and won't even try to get d4 in. I like playing the French at the moment.

I'd consider that a positive? unless you were trying to learns tons of najdorf theory or something?

e5, here my main lines:

Either scandinavian or alekhine depending on my mood.

If you play an e6 Sicilian (Kan, Taimanov, Scheveningen), you can actually get favorable versions of the French against most of the anti-Sicilians. This is an easy and strong approach to the deviations from the mainlines of the Sicilian if you are conversant with the French.

Now I suppose there is an argument that you won't get much practice in the Open Sicilian which is the most challenging apsect of the repertoire, but you encounter this problem to an extent with nearly every opening. You should spend the most time on the lines that are relevant to your level. If you play the French at the lower levels, you will probably begin with the Advance and Exchange variations and later spend more time on the Tarrasch and 3.Nc3 main lines as you encounter strong players.

Not quite sure if you're agreeing with me, or trying to clarify Melvin's position.

My post wasn't all that clear either, what I meant was:
Consistently meeting less challenging lines is a good thing, unless you are wasting time learning complex variations in the open sicilian.

I like the Lopez as white and black. It's really funny, there are a few anti-Marshall lines, but if you play d5 any ways and challenge their knowledge, most people players don't know why it's an anti-Marshall and flat out make wrong moves. Except the a4 players... but most of them think they're Carlsen and destroy their own positions or it just becomes very boring.

Sicilian Forever! If my opponent plays d4, I play the Najdorf and transpose into Scheveningen like Garry Kasparov.

In case of 6.Bg5 I play g6.
I have discovered that I am quite good with Sicilian defense and am succesful with it.

I absolutely adore the hippopotamus.

Even against center with three pawns where white didnt play Bc4 or a4? o.O

Being a former supporter of the Modern, you pretty much nailed it.  If White doesn't play Bc4 or a4 (the latter being the preferable one), the Hippo is a sorry defense, and White gets a huge advantage.  Different story all together if White commits to Bc4 or a4 (or Both is actually the best scenario for Black).

Now-a-days, Petroff, all the time!  All attempts to avoid it by White are futile.  I had 5 opponents all attempt to avoid the Petroff at the US Open, and I scored 4.5/5 against the scrubs.  The last round I only needed a draw.  I'd have taken the win if I could find one, but was content with the draw.

Two of them basically played an Exchange French by transposition (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.d3 Nf6 6.d4 d5), and the other 3 all played the Spanish Four Knights (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3 Nc6 4.Bb5).  The only two games I've lost since taking up the Petroff against 1.e4 were both cases where White went straight into the main lines against the Petroff.  I've also won a time or two when White has done that, but when White tries to avoid the Petroff, I'm really happy.  I almost already know that I won't get beat.  Draw in the worst case scenario.

Well, I've been playing the hippopotamus since more than 20 years,

and I play it even against grandmasters. Against a 3-pawn center d4,e4,f4

I usually play f5, the right order of moves is important to reach the

following position: Kg8, Qd7, Rf8+a8, Bg7+b7, Ne7+b6, pawns h6,g6,f5,e6,d6,c7,b5,a6. Against a 3-pawn center c4,d4,e4 I usually

play f5 (no b6, bishop remains on c8) or d5. Against a 4-pawn center

I normally play f5, d5 or c5. I admit that the hippopotamus is a very

difficult defence and I often lost in the beginning (cause I didn't know

the strategies well enough).If many players think it's a bad opening it

makes me happy cause it puts them under a big pressure to refute my

"bad" opening. So each learning player should be patient: If you

have arrived at understanding the essential strategies of this opening

you have a very strong weapon.

Taimanov Sicilian.I play e4 too and the Taimanov annoys me the most.
