My favorite opening by far is 1. d4 e6 2. c4 b6. The so called English Defense.

I started out with trying to find some kind of advantage against it from the white perspective. However after hours of hard work and not finding anything I actually started developing some love for the opening. Mainly because it's a very underrated variation which gives a lot of room for original ideas. So I've had a lot of fun exploring the world of english defense and developng a lot of new interesting ideas.

I eventually stoped playing it because of 1. d4 e6 2. e4! d5 3. Nc3!, which I really despise facing from the black perspective.

Some people find this opening dull and others think this is a opening that can create a chatoic game

For Black  Scandinavian  1. e4  d5  2. exd5  Qxd5  3. Nc3  Qa5

If they play anything other than 2. exd5  or. 3. Nc3 I am delighted!

The English Opening ...1.  C4 immediately puts the D file under pressure...Black can still advance and even prosper but will probably lose the Queen's pawn in the process.

1.  C4 asks Black questions early on, especially when used in tandem with E4 within the next 2-3 moves.  Not impossible questions of course but Black's attempts to build momentum in the centre are checked.  Key action is often diverted to the files either side of C, D and E.  A race to concentrate forces and attack down the flanks develops.

That's my view anyway!

I rather like the Colle-Zuketort variation for white, but lately I have been trying out the English opening as well.  For black, I usually play Sicilian.
