What openings produce pressure??

Im trying to figure out what openings i should use. I have looked at a bunch of games ive played and im pretty sure my style is that i like to put pressure on my opponent and keep increasing the pressure until my opponent cracks. I dont know what kind of openings would go with this style though so if anyone could help me id greatly appreciate it.

Thanx in advance,

All openings are designed to produce pressure - some pressure the queenside, other the kingside, third - the center, and they all vary in their ways of achieving this pressure. Give us more details.

cmi14

i like to put pressure on thier kingside (but i do not like to play gambits, except for benko and blumenfeld) And i like to have active piece play.

For white or black? Open or more closed?

cmi14

i like semi-closed positions that explode with tons of tactics. Ummm.... i dont want to make chess.com do all the work but if you could can i get openings for both white and black....and cmon people dont make poor ninevah do all the work please help out!!! im sorry im a needy person ;)

The sicilian is a classic choice for black against 1.e4, the Petroff too; the Ruy Lopez, the Italian game and the Scotch game - for white. Seriously, if you are starting out learning openings, those are the openings you should concentrate on first. With the exception of the Sicilian, they're not that hard on theory. Avoid fancy and very complicated openings.

cmi14

hmm.....arent those all open games though?? And i thought the ruy had tons of theory

CoachConradAllison

You should not learn the sicillian.!!.

The petroff is probably not best either.

Just play logically at your level, concentrate on tactics.

and im not a beginner im rated 1500(which IMO is like intermidiate) and ive used the italian it just gets on my nerves because its gives my opponent a free choice of plan

cmi14

and im very good at lots of tactics i just need to work on my strategy and openings(im very good at endgames too)

With the exception of the Scotch, those games also have their more closed variations. The English opening is stable too. However, if you are starting to learn openings, go with some of those.

It's ridiculous to start messing with the Indian systems so early, while the French, the Caro-Kan and the Pirc will not produce the pressure on the kingside you desire, nor will they be so tactically-rich as you want them.

cmi14

could you recommend some variations for me (white and black please?)

CoachConradAllison

Ok, I think you are probably right. I had a quick look at your games, although you made the odd blunder your tactics are quite strong (your rating is misleading).

Perhaps try a QGD against d4 and play e5 and the Ruy as black.

Try the scotch as white.

Try this link for more info on the scotch.

I'm a more conservative person as openings are concerned. Even for my level (OTB of 1900+), the Indian systems are a tough nut to be understood adequately and you can't believe how many mistakes I've seen in the complicated situations arising from their use.

ninevah

I'm a big fan of the Scotch so I support Chessy4000 Laughing

As for the variations, try out different things and with the time you'll see what works best for you.

cmi14

thank you but i used to play the ruy as black but i was crushed because the ruy *guaruarntees an advantage* and against d4 ive been play the benko but i just dont like the variation where white fianchettos but i do not want to play d5 because i dont want to play a slav or QGD or anything like that ...... sorry im so horribly stubborn

CoachConradAllison

I think there is no way to play as black to equalise with best play quickly.

ninevah

Don't expect the opening to do all for you. The Ruy is perfectly fine opening played on Super GM level but it can't guarantee you anything - it's up to you to grab that advantage and use it. Against 1.d4, browse through an opening library and read about the ideas of the openings there. Try one, then try another, then third and see what'll work for you. There's no silver bullet.

cmi14

 so what do you recommend???

You want to pressure the kingside, with active piece play, closed but exploding with tactics.

I'd say, pick one of those and be happy when you achieve it.
