Try the Tarrasch Defense - 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 c5. Just be aware that if white tries to win a pawn via 4. dxc5, you have to advance your pawn with 4. ... d4 as in this example:

I'm still a fan of calalan/queens indian/nimzo-indian (your opponents choice, really).
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. (either Nf3 or g3)
Ahhh now I understand!
Well, I always suggest beginners play 1...e5. It's probably the most solid and most classically based respoonse. It will encourage and re-enforce good development and castling habits, and introduce you to a wide variety of structures and plans.
I'm looking for an opening against 1.d4, that fits my style of play. I like to play in the center, Hypermodern opening aren't my thing, and I like quick simple Developing moves. I preffer playing in open positions. Other openings I play are Giuoco Piano, Morra-Smith Gambit, the Two Knights Defense, Berlin Defense against the Ruy. I've played the slav, albin countergambit, and the queens gambit accepted, there all okay but not quite my style.
