What's your opinion on the Worrall Attack in the Ruy?

The main line Ruy is 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7.

Then White usually plays 6.Re1 instead of the Worrall Attack 6.Qe2.  Can anyone explain why Re1 is so much more popular than Qe2?

Thanks very much.

If either queen is on the d-file when dxc5 dxc5 gets played they're gonna have to move off the file anyway.  So the Worrall would seem to be better when White plans on opening the center instead of closing it with d5.  Does that sound right?

Here's another question:

If Black plays a Chigorin-style setup with pawns on c5, d6 and e5, what general conditions would make White want to release the tension in the center with dxc5 as opposed to closing the center with d5?

My thinking was if White has no real king-side superiority, like if Black does a delayed king-side fianchetto, then he might want to play in the center more and open things up with dxc5?  Is that right?

I really think Qe2 is a good move. It simply hinders Black to take e4 (which is not a real trap but you have has to learn a lot with white), and it makes the Marshall impossible, so it's a great move even with results a bit better than Re1.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find a good book (or much better: a DVD) dealing with it not only as a footline. Or has anyone a hint where to find it?

The move is twice as old as Stonehenge. They had their chances, played by none.

What I understand to be the main problem with the Worrall is the line 6...b5 7 Bb3 0-0 8 c3 d5, when 9 exd5?! isn't as good as in the analogous Marshall position due to the Queen's exposed placement on e2 (...Nxd5-f4 is an idea, for example). Thus, White is compelled to play the rather modest looking 9 d3, which, while playable, isn't what everyone wants as White.

qe2 does not prevent black from playing a Marshall type gambit. It seems to be quite playable for black.

It seems to be better to play 8.a4 instead of 8.c3. If Black counters now q´´with -d5, White will take on b5 wit good prospects. The newest game in TWIC with it :

But ... the position seemed to be balanced (and was consequently drawn) with 8.a4, too. On the other hand: There is no serious opening in which White can get an advantage. If this would be the case, the professionals wouldn't play so any longer with Black.

So, you can with White only work for positions which seem to be pleasant for you, for whatever reason. More and more players like such stuff with c3 and d3, and a Ruy-Bishop on b3 or c2. It was Nigel Short who smashed the gigantic Karpov twice in their Linares-match with it, it ist Tiviakaov who has success with it over and over, and so on. Spassky, Kashdan, ... Some like it slow.
