Coke, all the way!

Seriously, I much rather prefer 1.d4 openings. The reason for this is that 1.e4 lines are very complex and are constantly being updated. 1.d4 offers a book set-up that leads into various solid positions for both sides. Plus, I like positional play a lot and so my preference is given to the Queen's Gambit and other lines.

A lot of my games start with 1.e4, though. It really depends on what mood I'm in; since I know many, many openings.

Both are equally good.  Pepsi is SO much better than Coke.

Records from thousands of master games indicate 1 c4 is 'better' than both d4 & e4, if you are prepared to take game results as the definition.

The English are the best. (yawn)

I play 1 e4 correspondence or casual otb seeking out tactics, & 1 c4 in serious games otb seeking to avoid tactics and time trouble.

for me e4 is like suicide.....d4 is homicide.

1. e4 was claimed the best by Bobby Fischer, I usually play this...afterall he is the best chess player ever.

I don't personally think Fischer was the best player ever, but that does not make him a less credible source, as he was undeniably a great player.  I know there're stories of him making jokes about playing e4 on principle because it was not a woman's place to make the first move (Queen's pawn = woman, not sure how the logic follows exactly, but the idea is clear).  I personally play e4 more often, but it's where I'm comfortable because I can go for a KG or Ruy Lopez or Vienna Game or Italian Game (I actually play a lot of Vienna Game, incidentally).  It's what I'm comfortable with, but I'd be lying if I didn't have eager eyes whenever a QG comes up.

Agreed.  But I think it's hilarious that the Soviets studied e4 like crazy to get ready to play him, then when the tournament started, what was the first thing Bobby did when he realized they had prepared only for e4?  c4 !  And then he went on to crush them!

What tournament was this?

1.e4 "Best by Test"... Bobby Fischer

In one move, you occupy and control the Center, while releasing the Queen and King's Bishop for development. No other move does as much! If you believe development and control of the Center are main objectives in the Opening, Then it would be Silly to play anything else.

e4 has to be played at move one, because it is not supported by any of the pieces (like the Queens pawn) and may require preparation or not be possible later.

Any Questions?  ;-)

This is beginner's logic. Didn't you see the "basic rule" that you're not supposed to bring your queen out early? So how important is it to be able to move the queen? white is always fighting for control of the center in d4 with c4 pressuring the d5 pawn and many pieces protecting e4. it's just as good, it's all about which one you like more. It would be incorrect to call one better than the other.

I tend to prefer d4, although stats currently say white has slightly better chances with e4 (FWIW, given the difference in sample size).

Chess.com's own game explorer rates d4 as giving worse chances for black, and its got a much better sample size.

I always play d4, 'cos I don't like e4 openings...

Not really a tournament, Fischer-Spassky World Championship, 1972 Reykjavik.  And he only played the English in 2 games, but it has become part of the Fischer mystique.

Source:  Wikipedia article:

"World-class match play (i.e., a series of games between the same two opponents) often involves one or both players preparing one or two openings very deeply, and playing them repeatedly during the match.[39] Preparation for such a match also involves analysis of those opening lines known to be played by the upcoming opponent. Fischer had been famous for his unusually narrow opening repertoire: for example, almost invariably playing 1. e4 as White, and almost always playing the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defense as Black against 1.e4.[40][41] He surprised Spassky by repeatedly switching openings, and by playing openings that he had never, or only rarely, played before (such as 1. c4 as White, and Alekhine's Defense, the Pirc Defense, and the Paulsen Sicilian as Black).[40] Even in openings that Fischer had played before in the match, he continually deviated from the variations he had previously played, almost never repeating the same line twice in the match.[42]"
