It's not my opinion- it's what several masters and grandmasters say. It has no "refutation". Refutation applies to something like the Latvian countergambit. But white never gets a winning advantage after any line in the traxler.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is that "Latvian Countergambit" thingy? Never heard of it.

HolyKing

Latvian Gambit right? Not Countergambit.

Steikt

I think it's called Latvian Gambit

WeLearnChess

As stated by others above, the Polerio Defense is the way to go (d5).

WeLearnChess

It gives Black the best fighting chances in the main lines, as you can see by looking at master-level databases and verifying with a good engine.

You are pardoned- although google is your friend, I'll explain :) it's 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f5?! Also called the Greco countergambit.

Ah, thank you! Now I get it.

So, 2.Nf3 is a gambit, and 2...f5 a counter-gambit- right?   Tongue Out

It makes equal sense to your claim of the Traxler being "equal".

May I also ask how the knight is moving?

The saga of the fried liver... Who will be victorious? All I know is you must put your heart, soul, and kidneys, heck, even a gall bladder into the fight against the attacking fried liver!!!  Ooga-Booga!!

Did you understand the topic?

I thought I did! Weren't we discussing the Flied River Attack? I jest love mah fly-Fischering and I bought me some poles jest fo' duh Fishin' Pole Trap.
I'm gonna git me some of dem trout, boy, I say, I'm fixin' tuh git me some of dem trout.
Nah, changed muh mind. Sturgeon - I lahk sturgeon bettuh.  And so does the Sturgeon General.

Wah? - you think that's called Fried Liver Attack?

Gee, I thought that was called Popeye's Chicken.

Or, no, Two Knights Defense, yeah, that's it...

ChessOfPlayer

The anti fried liver defence.

I did not make it up.

Good, because if you did, I wouldn't eat it anyway, even from a cast-iron skillet, much less a cheap aluminum pan. I prefer the Filet Mignon Defense.

WeLearnChess

The anti-Fried Liver defense (3...h6) is playable but a bit meek for my taste. White can castle or play the immediate d4 (in either order) and have a pretty comfortable game. Don't sit back and take this silly opening--turn the tables and counterattack with the Polerio.

If u really want to avoid fried liver, u can simply play the hungarian defence with 3...Be7 preventing Ng5 and developing (not the case for h6...) followed by Nf6 and 0-0.

Somewhat passive but reliable.

3...d6 is an alternative with the same type of positions.

Guys, there is no problem for black even after 4.Ng5. All you need to do is be ready how to fend off the attack. I don't think Bc5 is the best defense. I am not sure Bc5 is a good defense at all. After Nxf6, Black will lose the rook or queen. I used to play the fried liver attack but now I play another attack called the Max Lange Attack. I like it more than Fried Liver Attack. If the opponent plays well too, then you can achieve a draw in the middle as well as sometimes winning. After the Max Lange Attack, the endgames mostly favours white. There are variations as well. Black may loss a piece or White can force an exchange a bishop or knight trade for a rook.

Excuse me, Max lange attack goes this way:

The variation you showed is a transposition from Two knights defense(it's max lange attack anyway). For more information read this:

@aravindsomaraj :

Max Lange attack is of course a reliable weapon but the line u give is suspiscious...

Black has a great attack after a rook sacrifice, see this game :

14...Bxg4! is a very nice move and makes 13.Nf3 dubious.

So u have to go back to main line, with something like 13.Nxe6 followed by fxg7, or fxg7 first.

Then, its a fighting game...

SaintGermain32105

Nice.

8.fxg7 is the modern Max Lange treatment- certainly better than 8.Re1+. Black should be able to equalize with careful play, but the real problem for white is of course 5...Nxe4!

HolyKing

Yeah Ive seen the 5...Nxe4 line in one of Alterman's books. Its certainly sharp, and white seems to give up the B pair in the next 2 moves.

Sharp? I would say the opposite- most of the games after 6.Re1 d5 7.Bxd5 Qxd5 8.Nc3 etc end in a draw.

I have tried (as Black to keep the game lively with every possible and non-stupid move (8...Qa5, 8...Qh5, 8...Qd8 and 8...Qd7!?), but in vain.

So Traxler agressive, while ...d5 and ..Na5 lines are safe?

Both are aggressive (attackingchances). Na5 is sound while Traxler is not. Because of this i see no reason to choose the Traxler
