He meant d4 maybe?
Which opening should black play against e4 and d4

Against e4:
Sicilian Defence (Requires studying)(c5)
Scandinavian Defence (Easy to play)(d5)
French Defence (Solid) (e6)
Caro-Kann Defense (Does not require as much studying) (c6, d4, d5)

Against 1. d4:
Indian Game (Possibly transpose into Budapest Gambit,): d4 Nf6
Queen's Gambit declined (After d5, opponent plays c4) (d4, d5, c4, e6)
Dutch Defence (Weakens king side though) d4, f5
Englund Gambit (Not a good one, but maybe for beginners)(1. d4 e5 2. dxe5 Nc6 3. Nf3 (3. Bf4 Qe7 (3... f6)) (3. f4 d6) 3... Qe7 4. Bf4 ( 4. Nc3 Nxe5 5. Nd5 (5. Nxe5 Qxe5 6. e4 Bb4) 5... Nxf3+ 6. gxf3 Qd8) (4. Qd5 f6) 4... Qb4+ (4... d6) (4... f6) 5. Bd2 (5. Nc3 Qxf4 6. Nd5 Qe4 7. Nxc7+ Kd8 8. Nxa8 Nxe5) (5. Qd2 Qxb2 6. Qc3 Bb4) 5... Qxb2 6. Bc3 (6. Nc3 Bb4 (6... Nb4 7. Nd4) 7. Rb1 Qa3 (7... Qxc3 8. Bxc3 Bxc3+ 9. Nd2 Bxe5) 8. Rb3 (8. Nd5 Ba5 (8... Bxd2+ 9. Qxd2 Qxa2 10. Rd1 Kd8) 9. Rb5 Bxd2+ 10. Qxd2 Kd8) 8... Qa5 9. a3 (9. e3 Nge7 10. Bd3 Ng6) 9... Bxc3 10. Bxc3 Qc5 11. e3 a6 12. Bd3 Nge7) 6... Bb4 7. Qd2 (7. Bxb4 Nxb4) 7... Bxc3 8. Qxc3 (8. Nxc3 Qxa1+) 8... Qc1# *)

it really comes down to personal preference
yes. you might not enjoy a opening we like.

1.e4 e5 or e4 a6 or e4 a5 or e4 b6 or e4 e6 or e4 f6 or e4 Nc6 or e4 h5 or e4 h6 or e4 g5
2. d4 e6 or d4 c6 or d4 c5 or d4 f6 or d4 a6 or d4 a5 or d4 b5 or d4 h6 or d4 h5 or d4 b6

or basically 1.e4 (everything except for d5,d6,g6,f5,Nf6,Na6 and b5)
1.d4 (everything except for d5,f5,e5,g5,g6,Nc6,Nh6 and d6)

1. e4 : e5 I believe it's good for us amateurs because you need to study the most different types of openings, rather than the normal approach "Oh study the Caro you'll always get a Caro, study the Sicilian you'll always get a Sicilian, French, etc..." this approach is meant to make you study less but I think it does the opposite because there are just insanely endless amounts of variations in each of those [caro, french, sicilian]...
so e5 you need to be familiar with Ruy Lopez million different types, Italian million different types, Scotch, Scotch Gambit, Vienna, Danish, King's Gambit, Bishop's game, Center game, King's Indian Attack... Other weird gambits... etc ]
I personally like this incapability to really learn everything - then you become actually more non theoretical, because most of the time you have no idea whats going on, blunder, and learn from it... Also you are getting to know many different styles for White...
1 d4: Nf6
It allows the most aggressive stuff against the London, it prepares the Nimzo, English/Indian stuff, Benoni stuff if they go for it... Can transpose to Slav stuff too, and it dosen't immediately give them d5 which I guess most people playing d4 will be used to facing... I sometimes like not playing d5 even when it's the top engine move just to keep the center flexible and maybe use the diagonals, play b6 stuff, c5 stuff, etc...
What do you think about these ?
1.Best opening by black in response to e4
2.Best opening by black in response to d4
