White Openings to try

Sort:

Hello all, just looking for any suggestions on new openings I could try as white. In the past for white I've played some of the 1.e4 openings and recently have tried some Reti/English openings. The Reti/English seem closer to what I'm looking for, but aren't quite right I don't think. Meanwhile as black I will always stick to my tried and true Modern. Also I generally play a fairly balanced game, not overly aggressive or defensive.

So any suggestions from the community on what I should look into?

I love d4 openings. Your opponent might respond with d5 so you could try queen's gambit. Or they could try one of the Indian defences with Nf6. KID gives white a strong centre but black some excellent counterplay potentially. Nimzo is one of my favourite openings, it's very tactical. They might even respond with Dutch defence f5 aiming for a dynamic kingside attack. But there are many other options.

Uhm - how do you know?  There could be some person named Hikaru Caruana that does play 1...e5.

The person you are thinking of is not named Hikaru Caruana.  There is no such Grandmaster.  The "Grandmaster" is Fabiano Caruana, just like how there is no Magnus Anand, it's Magnus Carlsen.

The "fake" names are intentional specifically because it is NOT a real game, it's a couple of moves and he attached some phony names to it.

If you are dumb enough to think that Hikaru Caruana is a chess grandmaster, maybe you can also tell me how many animals Moses brought on the ark!
