White openings

Hello, I am in search of a good white opening.

Currently I use the yugoslav attack however I don't really know how to use it unless it is against the sicilian defense. Could someone help me on how to use the yugoslav attack or suggest a new white opening?

I used the stonewall attack for a while and I really like it however I find it very really restrictive on how I need to constantly protect e4.

Thanks

Learn the Italian game, the Fried Liver, surviving the Traxler: all that open tactical theory.  Oh not seriously deep, just enough to be able to play it.  It's almost a required rite of passage for newer players.  Then you can either switch to the Spanish, or if you're tired of playing against the Sicilian, d4.  The Berlin can make you switch too.  Or just e4 and wing it according to basic opening principles and wait for your opponent to violate them or even hang  a piece.  Here's the basics of some theory:

i seriously doubt anyone on your level is playing the traxler in a serious game, which does not imply it is bad. It's just such a complicated opening you will rarely face it. Don' t waste time with learning the theory of the traxler or such openings such as the halloween gambit. Better yet: stay away from opening theory . Just try to get your pieces out and stake a claim in the center and castle: follow opening principles, you know.

The "Yugoslav Attack" is specifically a line against the Sicilian Dragon (not even all lines of the Sicilian).  It's one line against one defense.  You need more than that!

If you are going to play 1.e4, you need answers to each of the following:

1...e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 - I would recommend 3.Bb5 intending to castle quickly.  If Black plays 3...a6, take on c6 and then castle.  Otherwise, most lines you can follow by castling on move 4.

1...e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 - This is known as the Petroff - I would recommend 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.Nc3 Nxc3 6.dxc3 with Queenside Castling.

1...e5 2.Nf3 d6 - This is known as Philidor's Defense, 3.d4 is best here.

1...c5 2.Nf3 d6 (or 2...Nc6 or 2...e6) - Play 3.d4 and assuming Black captures (will 99.99% of the time), recapture with the Knight.  If Black harasses the e-pawn, protect with 5.Nc3.  If he doesn't, take advantage and get in c4 first.

1...e6 - This is the French, I recommend the Advanced Variation.  It's simple and effective.  After 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Nf3, the center is locked and White will attack Kingside, Black Queenside

1...c6 - This is the Caro-Kann.  The idea is similar to the French but Black wants to get the Bishop out first, and he will spend an extra move with the c-pawn to do it.  I say deny Black that luxury and play the Fantasy Variation (3.f3).  The Bishop has nowhere to go, and if Black trades, you get the big center with fxe4 and your Knight can then go to f3 instead of e2.

1...d6/1...g6 - This is the Pirc/Modern.  A big pawn center with pawns on d4, e4, and f4, along with a Knight on c3, is very powerful.

You can't just learn one line for White, and think that it is effective against all Black responses - it's not!  Not even the London System (Black gets an advantage if White plays the London System against the Modern Defense).
