Why are openings that begin with d4 always characterized as closed?

I have been playing chess for a term now and I wonder why are d4 openings called closed games.

Because of tradition

1 d4 usually leads to closed positions. After 1 e4 white can usually follow up with d4, as Qd1 together with the usual Nf3 support d4. After 1 d4 white usually cannot follow up with e4 as black can control square e4 with ...d5 and/or ...Nf6, and later ...b6 and ...Bb7 and/or ...Bb4.
