Why is anti Qxd4 Sicilian so effective?

So I was looking through the game explorer and I came across anti Qxd4 Sicilian move order, a common line of sicilian shown below. What I found strange was that it was ridiculously effective for black. Only three moves into the game, and black already has a slight advantage over white (from databases). It doesn't make sense to me, after all, Qxd4 isn't the main line for white (Nxd4 is). I expect this transposes into a normal sicilian dragon after a few moves, but if this is so effective for black, why is it not the main line? And why is it more effective than the main line (3... cxd4) anyways?

Not sure what you are asking here because you have not shown a Qxd4 capture. Also this is a transpositional line into the Dragon here.

Were I to see Qxd4 from White, I would play simply Nc6, forcing White to cede a tempo and giving Black a slightly better game. Nxd4 allows White to work on c6 and e6 and then Nc6 by Black is not so dangerous anymore.

Qxd4 cedes the Bishop-pair, not a tempo (... Nc6, Bb5). The idea is to pin or exchange the Knight long enough to play c4 with a Maroczy Bind... after which move, White's light-squared Bishop would not be an especially active piece anyway.

My friend killed me with my Qxd4 Nc6 Bb5 then Qa5+ Nc3..afta 6moves was checkmated.it was a blitz game 1US dollar stakes.was humiliated in front of my frends!wil neva do it again.i learnt it from anand Qxd4.

@Portlandpatzer, that was just the name of the variation, B50 (Sicilian: Modern Variations, Anti Qxd4 Move Order). And yeah, vs. Qxd4, I usually play the same. It just surprised me that this variation scores higher for black than the main line sicilian dragon.

And yeah, the evil Maroczy Bind...Frown haha

6 moves...I remember once I was beat in about 6 moves by a kid who was about 6 years old. That was embarassing haha.

Wow he must be have been a prodigy, not so.yeah, anyway learnt my lesson..haha will go for the nxd4..and if black continues to dragon..will just continue as planned.

It might be just a sampling bias. 3. ... Nf6 is played far less frequently than 3. ... cxd4, so its percentage results are much less statistically meaningful.

Also... you need to bear in mind just WHO is likely to be playing each line. The people who are most likely (as Black) to go out of their way to avoid White's Qxd4 are those who feel that a draw with the Black pieces is not acceptable. A large part of that group will represent players who out-rate their White opponent by a substantial margin, and are playing a specific move-order intended to avoid drawing lines. If they out-rate White by a fair margin, it's not surprising if they score better than 50%.

I dont see any problem with Qxd4 and I prefear take with

Nxd4

statistics mean nothing. The funniest I know of is the 'ryder gambit', if you wish to look it up. Its horrible, yet has a 70% win rate for white.

Chances are it was used to catch some players off guard then a path against it was found and it stopped being played.

because thats the engine move.. engine is better than human...

This post is several years old, so I'm not expecting a response, but does anyone know what exactly is going on after 4.dxc5 Nxe4 5.cxd6 Nc6 6.dxe7 Qxd1+ 7.Kxd1 Bxe7 8.Be3? Or is 5...Nxd6 the better move?

this is a fast checkmate trap i found using the same opening very effective in bullet and blitz even won a few games like this i always play this if white plays the open sicilian its my favorite and gone over the many variations
