Check out my Ruy lopez forum if you need too...
Why not the Scotch?

IM pfren, you said your opponent blundered and hanged a pawn, so don't go around accusing the scotch of being trash/giving black great play, because look at what the Marshall attack does in the ruy lopez!

It is a very dangerous attack, class As lose to it! Plus, the ruy lopez has variation this and variation that, no one remembers ALL those variations. You dont even have and online rating, stauntonmaster

Hi HorribleTomato, I actually see the scotch fairly often. However, the scotch has personal significance for me - as it was the first opening that I regularly played. Since then my repertoire has become built off of d4, but the experience of my e4 past (especially the scotch), I think has helped me. I am far from a "high level chess player", but I would think that the scotch is somewhat popular up to maybe 2200 (I would say higher, but I can't think of any contemporary IM or GM who defaults to the scotch, although several masters still play it). I still like the scotch as an opening from either side though; I appreciate you mentioning a topic like this in the forums, and as I'd like to see more players use this opening.

I play the Scotch almost all of e4 games I play... I know the Spanish is solid but the variations are endless....some of the top gms used the Scotch to surprise opponents.... in bullet it usually busy me some time

Although the position slightly favours white, this is still equal.
So that, really, The Scotch could not be such a surprise weapon and complicated open play could be easily avoided.

Kasparov used it as a surprise weapon at times to avoid the Ruy... it works believe me... black can equalize but it is an open game...

As I said above, I like the Scotch Goering in speed games. But not only because it gives white excellent attacking chances. I think a lot of players are much less familiar with it than the Ruy, Giuoco Piano, Evans, etc. Also as I said, black has to be careful to stay out of trouble. Playing an opening that forces your opponent to think more is an obvious plus in a speed game.

Most of the time I try to play the Scotch, black plays the Philidor.
Even better for you if you want to play aggressively. I think 2...Nc6 is considerably stronger than 2...d6. Just follow with 3. d4 exd4 4. c3 and you've got the Bird Gambit, which I think is even stronger for white.

Me: Would you like a Rum Broccoli ?
You: (blink blink)

Iwinyoulosedontcry, I play what I play, Forums is not a spelling/ grammar lesson, so deal with it. I am one of the best spellers and have great grammer. Typing has its own language, shortening words know/no too/2 so it's faster to type. Also, just realize that I compared those two for AGE and EXPERIENCE.
Stauntonmaster, don't forget the Marshall attack!
