How can I improve on chess without getting help from a coach

It sounds like your team is doing great. The one thing I would add on top of practicing more (two days a week, daily tactics puzzles) is to play tournaments AT practice for part of the over all practice time. You want to mimic the real thing as much as possible. That includes using the clocks during practice. Also, try to have your team play other tournaments besides your HS competition... experience helps a lot. Chess players learn more when there is something at stake. Ive coached at the same middle school for 12 years... we have won 5 county championships vs 20-25 other schools (including wealthy academy schools)... and have tried different things through the years... what worked for us I tend to keep. :)

They are all dated 4-10. I say give the guy a break...he is putting his time in to help kids ...its a huge commitment to run a student chess team. :)

I'm glad I can help. You already have a key ingredient... You have a passion for chess AND a passion to help kids. The success we have had didn't happen overnight... the first 3 years were brutal. Some of the techniques that helped my teams are stated above. :)
Thanks a lot fo the advice any other advices to help my chess team prepare for next season
