New FIDE rulle about mobilephones

Hey everyone.

I just want to start a little debate here about a new rule made by FIDE.

The rule have some good points, but unfortunetly also some bad sides (in my opinion)

The rule is saying, that bringing any kind of phone into the place where a tournament is being played (if you are a player of course).

As far as i know every club who is hosting a tournament, should have a cupboard, where all the players who have bringed their phone, should be locked in. The phones inside the cupboard is totally at the arbiters responsibility. And imagine approx. 30 players is bringing their new iphone which have costed them 400 Euro, so 30x400 Euro = 12000 Euro. If there in some way is getting, water inside the cupboard, or it is falling, then the aribiter is going to pay 12000 Euro, which easily can be much more than what he/she is earning.

Now, if im wrong about the cupboard rule, then lets say that you are a busy man working from 10 in the morning to 6 in the evening. You are going to play a tournament starting 6:30 in the evening, so you can not get home and bring your phone there. Then you are forced to leave it on the work. BUT

The rules is saying, that if an arbiter is thinking that a player actully have bringed a phone to the playing hall, then the arbiter should search the players jacket, bag and so on. I live in Denmark, and here only the danish police is allowed to search people, and an local arbiter is not a policeman, so?!?! How do you then want to bust a guy who you think have a phone on him?

I was thinking for a while, if there was any alternative to this rule, which have some sense, but also can get problems.

And a managed to find a alternative. Why dont you put your phone shutdown, on the table where you are sitting, at this way, you can bring your phone but people is able to see, that you dont se it during the game!

Please leave your opinion about this new rule below.

I fail to understand what is your problem here...? If you have a common sense, then you will just turn off your phone and you're done with it...or put it on that cupboard and go play your games...I think all those scenarios you came up with like getting water in the cupbpoard and so on, are just ridiculous childish...

MrBanterSam

Honestly will i prefere to have my own mobile at my self, instead of in a box together with many other mobilephones, then i also dont have to disturb the arbiter (who here in Denmark deffinelty could be playing the tournament) and ask him to write the code, look for my phone which is placed together with many other phones... Maybe the thing with water was childish, but still, having the responsiblity for 12000 Euro, in up to 6 hours, isn´t that fun i will guess

GMVillads

I dont understand the rule and i wont care - i´ll just play chess

I'm sure he can take care of that responsability pretty well, after all, there will be chess players not thiefs...isn't it better not to take your phone with you in the first place? or leave it with a friend that's watching if you need it that badly and you're afraid to put it in the cupboard?

just saying...

MrBanterSam

I am still going to school, and need my hpone since chess, isn´t my own sport/activity, and leaving it at home is having that simple problem for me, that some tournaments actully isn´t very close to my home, and then i really cant get a ride home from my parents

This is a pretty pointless rule. Most chess players don't cheat and the ones who do will find another way to do so.

Another case of chess players overthinking things.Laughing

1.  If for some reason, you are unable to leave the phone at home, etc.  Then turn it off.

2. There is no reason to have a cell phone at a tornament.

I played a tourney recently where this rule was being followed.Just switched off my cellphone and kept it in my bag the whole tournament.Nothing happened.I find this rule silly.

Cheating like a gentleman +1

The rule is stupid, but if you only use your phone after the game (or if someone gets a heart attack), only the cheaters will think you are cheating.

Similar rules exist for many countries about exams such as driver's license written tests, national diplomas, etc.

I do agree though that it is enough to forfeit players whose phone makes a noise and forbid it to be on person. If the phone is in your bag and shut off, it is hard to imagine how you can use it to cheat without being caught.

There's been a few threads about this. The last one was phones in the rest rooms.

My, my, my! How did we even manage to survive before the invention of mobile phones?

I take my phone wherever I go. It would be strange to leave it at home. I should think that having it switched off (and with no chess engine installed on it anyway) should be quite enough for the normal, decent player. If they want to search, let them search (my playing isn't that precise anyway...)

So true, and such a sad commentary on our society.

I was gonna go to the bathroom and take a shit, but then I found out, there's an app for that.  How someone can survive their own birth without call waiting, text, and E-mail these days is nothing short of a miracle.

How did we manage before cars ?

How did we manage before cheap transportation from factories in China ?

How did we manage before the wheel and fire ?

Your ability to pass on one of today's commodities is probably hiding a large dependance to other commodities. Careful not to boast too much.

Just love the way things go Off-topic.

Now we are talking about rules, In Denmark we have just got a new rule so now it is not a 3 move repetition, but a 5 move repetition!!! What do you think about that?
