My, my, my! How did we even manage to survive before the invention of mobile phones?

So true, and such a sad commentary on our society.

How did we manage before cars ?

How did we manage before cheap transportation from factories in China ?

How did we manage before the wheel and fire ?

Your ability to pass on one of today's commodities is probably hiding a large dependance to other commodities. Careful not to boast too much.

I dont think anyone is boasting.  Spekaing for myself, I do think it is a sad state of affairs when you have people saying things like "I odnt know what id do without my phone"  Of course you know what you wouold do...you did it.  Technology is a great thing, but i see it as a way to make life better, noy make us dependant on "things"  Thats how robots take over the world.  This is how the terminators took over.

Just leave the phone in the car. If that is not possible than ask the tournament staff to lock it in a room that is not used for playing.

I doubt any tournament leader will have any problem with that solution.
We don´t have to make it a problem, just be open about what you do and thinks will be fine.

Any reason given for why Denmark went from 3 to 5 ??

B-Lamberth

Are you sure about this Heine?

I cant remember seeing anythink like that.

JGambit

what is the issue with this rule?

phones are capable of playing strong chess.

If I am in a tournament I do not want to see a phone anywhere near my opponent.

GMVillads

This made me wonder, how did they play chess in the 20th century? Without phones!?

Now we are talking about rules, In Denmark we have just got a new rule so now it is not a 3 move repetition, but a 5 move repetition!!! What do you think about that?

Bit late for an April Fools' joke... but it would be a pretty stupid rule, just prolonging drawn games.

I hate cell phones....they are annoying BUT  I have to live with one....If I go to a tournament I turn it off...that simple.

RonaldJosephCote

That makes sense. 5 move repetition. People from Denmark never get involved in a war.

Mobile phone rule isn't exactly sensible. In quite a few venues it's not very practical to deal with storage. Unless it's properly documented when a phone is deposited it's quite possible someone could claim they've left a phone they never even left. Ideal scenario mentioned is lockers but not everywhere has 200+ of them available for guests.

As far as need to take mobile phones if you play in an event where it finishes late and you rely on public transport or even walking to get home then if any unforeseen accident occurs you are in trouble. You could twist your ankle, find yourself stranded in a remote location or even find someone who requires urgent medical attention collapsed on the ground. Either way it would be a death or injury directly linked to adherrence to FIDE's rules on mobile phones.

I tend to be a bit skeptical about a lot of FIDE's measures. For example having a switched off mobile phone in an otb event is a problem but FIDE has no concerns that on their online chess arena where they intend to use their games for people's real ratings that someone can't use that same mobile phone in front of their monitor. If FIDE has a flawless method to catch them then banning mobiles is unnecessary, all they need to do is analyse games and if that isn't the case well then most of steps taken are just PR stunts that cause hassle but don't fix problem.

For example how many players have been questioned about hearing aids? Has anyone considered it could be a receiver for wireless communications and person is pretending to be deaf? If someone wears glasses could the be google glasses? What happens if google contact lenses appear?

If someone from FIDE is reading this I hope they don't suggest that solution is to strip search people, then x-ray them and to be on safe side then fire a strong EM pulse to fry any electronic devices. Chess players with pacemakers I'm sure would welcome reform Wink

RonaldJosephCote

Wow, I kind of like the EM pulse idea to take out a lot of GM's with pacemakers.

I don't have a mobile phone so this rule will cause me no problem. The rule seems OK to me but I suppose your idea about leaving the phone in plain site switched off would be a perfectly good alternative.

It is true that some precautions can seemn to cause far more trouble than the evil they seek to prevent. Air travel is becoming almost impossibly tedious with all the security precautions taken and I would prefer to take my chances with the occasional mad person than go through the madness of standing in a long line so as to take off my shoes and surrender bottles of water. But this particular precaution does not strike me as disproportionate. There have been only a tiny number of incidents of cheating but those that have happened are shocking and feed the very unattractive paranoia which you can sometimes see on this site. I am in favour of keeping electronic devices out of the playing areas.

Annabella1

Me too...there is no need for them....is you, your opponent and the chess table.
