What is a reasonable amount of admins and super admins?

Hi,

What is a reasonable amount of admins and super admins? Currently in my group,Isolated Chess, there is one SA (me, the founder), and 5 admins: Luidefunes, White_Fang3, TheGoalkeeper, Supreme_Commander, Beginner_Knight. Luidefunes (Albert) is my good friend. TheGoalkeeper (Ryan) is like my back - up. White_Fang3 is very active in forum games and is very friendly. Supreme_Commander (Frank) is not that active in Isolated Chess, and when I ask him to do things, it takes many times until he does it. But when he does, it is awesome. Beginner_Knight (BK) has not been active for some time, but probably on vacation (it is summer!). In the beginning, he was head of team matches and so active in them. However, even when he was on, he didn't/doesn't do much.

well depends on what you want to do and what you excpect of them, note that I have no idea what ingroup chess admin work involves, but it looks like you have 6 admins (inkluding you) and 70 members which is a insane amount.

Splitt them and make a forum mod, site mod and a general mod (you). Mod duties should then ble restricted to pure site and forum mantaniance, meaning no chess related stuff in mod time. This should keep you going until well 500 users, depending on how active your site is.

Rememeber that you can have a buckload of people doing chess related tings, just call them HCV's or something (hardened chess veterans) :P But restrict their admin rights and ask them to stay far away from anything conserning moderation.

Hope this helps, I have never managed a site at chess.com, but this is the general idea for any other of site page :)

mrhjornevik What do you mean, split them? And I think that I should cut down Frank and BK but I'm not sure. And by restricting HCV's admin rights do you mean admin them but not let them do a lot? How is that?

RonaldJosephCote

You should post a mod at every exit to insure that nobody steals anything in the forums.

rockongirl

RonaldJosephCote What do you mean mod? Admin or member? And how do I know who to trust or who will be there?

RonaldJosephCote

The more mods you have, the smaller your insurance premiums will be.

mrhjornevik

Oki I will try again :)

Mod is short of moderator, a different word for administrator.

You should find two people you trust and appoint them forum mod and site mod (preferebly from your current mods).

A forum mod checks the forum to ensure everybody is nice with each other, but never change anything visual on the site.

A site mod makes the page look pretty, but never tuches the forums.

HCV is just a fancy title you can give to people you want to stick around, but dont want to actualy do anything with the site

RonaldJosephCote

                     TRUST NO ONE!      THE'RE  HERE!!!

RonaldJosephCote

"just a fancy title you give to people who want to stick around, but don't want to do anything".    Really?  Your gonna leave that one wide open??  Ok, you could insert a word and have 6 threads right there. ( friends, politicians, in-laws, ex-wives, musicians, lolly-gagers, etc, etc.)

rockongirl

RonaldJosephCote Sorry, I don't understand either or your 3 posts!

mrhjornevik Thanks, now I understand. There's no two people I trust completely, but I trust them (Albert and Matthew_Alexander, Matthew) but Matthew doesn't want to be admin. However, White_Fang3 would be great for forum mod sense she is so active in forums! However, I don't know who could be site mod but I don't think I need it. However, I could use Team Match and Vote Chess Game and Note ModsAlbert would be great for Note Mod and I think Commander_Riker (who is not an admin) could be a great Vote Chess Mod but who for the Team Match Mod

So, I am the only SA.

Albert/Luidefunes = Note Mod

White_Fang3 = Forum Mod

Commander_Riker = Vote Chess Game Mod

And someone = Team Match Mod

So should only these people be admins? First I'll ask them if they like to be it, and if they say yes, only these should be admins? There would be 3 - 4 admins and me as SA. Does that sound ok?

mrhjornevik

hehe,

you get get a "like" Ronald :)

"People you dont want to do anything with the site", would probably be a better choice of words

RonaldJosephCote

I'm just screwing with you. I wish you luck on your group. Its a lot of work. Don't forget to issue tin-foil hats to everyone.Cool

rockongirl

mrhjornevik I asked everyone and I think Ryan/TheGoalkeeper will be Team Match mod.

mrhjornevik

its your sits so you rule, but are you sure you want 5 mods? why not make him some sort of game mod and give him both team and vote chess?

The less admins the less mess :)

NeppityNepNep

That is true, you Don't want many SAs and you must trust them completely, I have seen so any groups that have gone down due to SAs ruining the group, however, you should have a second one to keep watch on the admins when you are not online. As for admins, you need equal number of admins and jobs, if you create a new job, you get a new admin. Another approach is to have a small number of admins, but the SA must do an admin job as well as moderation. Hope this helps,

Matthew

I can't see any problem with having as many admins as there are people willing to put in some of their time.

Maybe it is worth pruning admins who lose interest and stop doing anything. But I doubt that pruning need be much of a priority.

Good luck with your group.

rockongirl

mrhjornevik So, you think Commander_Riker should be Team Match and Vote Chess Game Mod?

Matthew_Alexander Yes, I have mostly thought only I should be SA so that

1. No bad person gets promoted

2. Not too much power

Anyways, who should be my second eye? YouAlbert, and White_Fang3 are online the most, but you said you don't want too much, Albert, well, you know. So, shouuld White_Fang3 become my second eye?

johnyoudell Yes, I have removed some admins who are just, well, not good.

mrhjornevik

well it would leave you with a forum mod, a site mod and a game mod.

That should have you covered for now

NeppityNepNep

The SA must be COMPLETELY trusted. This prevents the two things you mentioned. I can be admin if you really need me. But I recommend White_Fang3, however she won't be as active as me.

CaptainPike

I have a group of over 700 and only 3 admins. I only know of one of the admins you currently have, and he's spread pretty thin. If the other two are doing what needs to be done to keep the group active (and not getting your group into losing streets with poor strategies in event creation), then I'd think you have plenty.

Keep only admins that are interested in the group, have the group's best interest at heart and invest time and energy into the group. Add new admins only when your current admins are doing what is needed to keep the group up and running and active and they are giving you clues that they don't have enough time.

The more admins you have, the better chance you have of disagreements between the admin team; and that's something you don't want.

Just mho.
