Mir Sultan Khan had rights guaranteed by law.  He chose his path in life.  The Indian Slavery Act of 1843 outlawed slavery in British India.  However, the Caste System remained in place.

As we've learned here in the US, abolishing slavery is only a half-measure when a brutally enforced caste system remains.
