Well, on the mental problem side, I'm bi-polar and definitely have bad days but chess has been able to keep me focused. I've always been weird on some level, but I'm proud of it. I never thought it was bad. I don't think it makes people weaker, actually, I think it makes people stronger. Chess is a social activity on some level, and you can make a lot of friends on here as well, so it is all good.

Welcome to chess.com  :-)

rab63, you know, you didn't even say anything with your message. You basically said what I'm saying in another way. Maybe I was not able to explain myself. All your doing is making fun of me, in the same way I made fun of myself. You have nothing to hurt me. And if your attacking me, then you have a problem with this message. What I said is clearly in the open. Everybody can see that tournament chess players are different then the rest of the world. So they aren't normal. That could be a good thing, I don't know. I'm not blaming anything on chess yet. I'm seeing what people think about this topic. And why shouldn't I blame chess the early deaths of great chess players. You have nothing with your message rab63, your just spaming.

Do you blame the early deaths of many musicians on music? And anyway, how many chess players can you name that died young?

what makes you want to attack a person who is open about his feelings, and say he has no social skills. You need to work on yours for such comments as well

Apparently not.

"Whereas a lot of studies examine cognitive processes in chess players, personality profiles of elite chess players are still not described well. The aim of this study was to examine personality of strong chess experts and its influence on chess skill. We tested elite male and female chess players with Freiburg Personality Inventory Revised (FPI-R), which also provides population norms for males and females. Elite male players' personality profile did not significantly differ from the population norms. Female players were more satisfied with life, had less physical complaints and higher achievement motivation in comparison with female population norms. Personality was also related with chess skill but showed different patterns in males and females. Stronger male players were more introverted, while we found the opposite pattern in female players. These results indicate that personality plays an important role in the highest level of complex intellectual activities." ...

You have a good point bsrasmus. But I think that the types of problems that come onto chess players are very different then the problems that make others weird from other professions. A lot of people are different due to the type of work or activity that they do, but there difference is not negatively wrong. Like social skills, and mental problems are somewhat negative compared to a broken leg from skating or playing basketball.

westy1, 99 percent of all the chess world championship players have died weird and early deaths. This may be due to extreme pressure they put on themselves (while not knowing). If you have noticed, many chess players have a deeper voice after playing a chess game. In there interview, they have a hard time speaking, sort of like trying to get some air. After you run, you can't speak as well. Also those who are boxers speak with squeaky voices, after there game.

"There either not social, or very social. They don't act normal, or don't look normal. They aren't the role models that most people have grown up to be. I'm afraid for those kids who go and play in the same games."

Not social, or very social?  Boy, that's weird!Surprised

Don't act normal, or look normal?   Aliens? Weird!Surprised

"They aren't the role models that most people have grown up to be."  That statement is weird!Surprised

I'm afraid for you whenever you decide to leave the house, Pip! Wait until you go to an amusement park, the library, work, a  nightclub, actually anywhere there are people! It's just going to be weird!Surprised

Sure, other groups have different idiosyncrasies. Doesn't make them any less weird.

Exactly, musicians have their idiosyncracies, like snorting heroin off of girls and such.
