I have to say that everyone I have met who is supposedly cool turns out to be unbelievably boring. I thought being cool meant having car chases and stuff.

I agree. Dogs chase cars and they are cool. Everyone thinks cats are cool but they are not, they are rubbish. I'm undecided about fish.

You go to a chess tournament and you're surprised to find some people are not very social?

Let me guess, this would be mostly the seriously focused competitive players perhaps?

Sure, you can find the occasional player with orange hair or body odor, but you can find those wandering around at Walmart too.

 What's wrong with orange hair?

Maybe someone with orange hair stole his hair - I think it's a grudge.

To address the OP:  To make a long story short... Normal/cool people are so shallow and boring I can barely stand to listen to them speak.. and only in small doses.  Yes competitive chess is filled with alot of very interesting people that "cool" people would call "wierd".

there are plenty of cool people that are interesting. I don't know where you two are going wrong in finding them :)

Are you saying that 99 percent of cool people are interesting?

Why not. Someone has to stick up for those cool folk and they ain't here to defend themselves, cos cool people don't play chess.

Macho Man Randy Savage is cool and interesting. That's if he is still alive.

I don't mean to disrespect anyone by this post. Especially chess players. All I'm trying to do is find out to the greatest extent of how to prevent a physical or social problem. All I'm trying to do is help you.

Maybe if positive answers were given in this post, we would have figured out something very beneficial to help a chess player, but all most of guys are doing is going off topic.

i have two basic and simple questions for the idiot who decided to post this topic.

1.Why put up something like this just to insult some people you met at a tourny one time?

2. Define "normal" for human beings. we all act different, think different, and are physically different, there is no human being exactly alike to another so calling someone weird is basically just saying they're human.

By the way one last thing, dont blame your hobby for being the cause of you being a social reject.

godie, I agree that I have insulted some people that I have met in a chess tourney one time, and I am totally responsible for that. I understand that normal could be many things. Human can be many things. I am a social reject. But the question I'm asking you is, do people who are weird get attracted to chess, or does chess make people weird?

And you are saying that chess attracted a person, who is me, that is weird. Fine.

But how do I change? How can I become a better person? Or am I ok as a person?

I am blaming chess for my social problems, because there are a lot of people like me in tourneys.

Yes 99 percent of people went off topic here. We should let you help us stay focused on the behavior you want to impose on us, because otherwise we will die weird deaths when we get old.

When I say you're smart, I'm not saying you have an IQ of 50 or above. Seriously, that statistic was just way too big to pull out of your ass on a chess site.

Do you have anything else to say? There is no statistic. I am not quoting anybody. There is not real statistic. It's all out of my ass. If I were a statistician, I'd try to find the real statistic.

The deaths of many world class chess players have been from mental problems. I'm not pulling that thing out of my ass. All your doing is looking with a monocular on 99 percent and saying I'm wrong. Of course it's wrong. I'm not an idiot, or in your words "smart".

Maybe one leak may make a pipe lose it's pressure but the sprinkler will continuously flow water when there is a fire.

Isn't it enough to see that a garden(chess) is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies(weird players) at the bottom of it too?

manavendra: Nice paraphrase of Douglas Adams.

Gigante: If you feel you are socially awkward, what I recommend is practice.  Practice socializing, set goals to go out at least once a month with friends.  If you don't have any close friends, find some.  Easiest way is to join groups focused on activities you enjoy (chess, book clubs, etc.).  And realize others are very accepting of our flaws.  Generally people want to like you.

But why did you make it up? Just say "I always had the impression, maybe I'm wrong, that a lot of chess players were nuts" which sounds more normal than posting b/s to convince a bunch of chess players that they are going to go crazy and die from it.

I didn't think it mattered enough for me say that. I don't think that they are completely convinced. I'm not trying to brain wash anyone.

I'm sorry for those who think they are gonna go crazy and die for. But there is a lot of evidence for there to be looked at. Maybe we don't have the equipment yet to find out.

Some real statistics (from post #8) :

"Elite male players' personality profile did not significantly differ from the population normsFemale players were more satisfied with life, had less physical complaints and higher achievement motivation in comparison with female population norms."

Summary: male chess players are no weirder than non-chess players; female chess players are less weird than non-chess playing females.

For 4 decades I have been around chess players in tournament/club and social settings. I dont find them to be , in general, any more weird than if you go to a local Mall and just observe people , maybe even less so. Or, go to a concert , same deal. If you want weird , try riding the subway in any major city in the world.... Wink

Every time I go to a tournament game, the people who play there are so weird. There either not social, or very social. They don't act normal, or don't look normal. They aren't the role models that most people have grown up to be. I'm afraid for those kids who go and play in the same games.

Also, many of histories greatest chess players have died very early in there lives. Either it was because of a mental problem, or physical.

For me, chess has effected me in many ways, I'm not social at all, I am very compulsive, and I don't have any friends.

Do weird people like chess, or does chess make any normal human being weaker, and weaker (without knowing) until they have problems too?

I had this kind of concern back when I was a young man and concerned that my participation in chess would prevent me from attracting women. Years later, I'm married, have a daughter, a nice home, a good job....everything a good, normal Joe should have. Guess what...I'm still a freak at heart. If you love chess, play chess, and love and accept others for who they are. Nobody who achieved anything great was ever "normal."

No real problem here. We could still engage in some form of conversation. just a bunch of wholesome, fun-loving hermits.

@Gigante: You are perfectly okay. To give an example of extreme weird players, here is the suicide note of a Chess player who died recently:

I realised that, for the first time, as a Chess player, I became the enemy. I represented to others everything that was bad in life. And, I also represented failure.

Difficult to go back. Back over the line from fiction to reality. You can't just stop being insane whenever you want to. It's the kind of thing that stays with you forever.

The player resigned from Life after this.
