If Fisher had wanted to, I'm sure he could have set up a match in another location.  It didn't have to be Yugoslavia.  If all he wanted was money, he had plenty of offers prior to that match.  From all accounts, he was well past his prime by the time he played that match.

Personally, after the nonsense he spewed following 9/11, I lost most of my respect for him.  He was clearly, in his prime, an amazing chess player.  But as a human being, he was a failure.

For those interested, I'd recommend a book called "Bobby Fisher Goes To War".  Very interesting reading.  It's more about background and politics than it is about chess.

Kasparov may laugh at Spassky but he shouldnt laugh too hard as he only has 50% record against him...... Wink

When both parents abandon you its a challenge to be " normal " , I would imagine. There are probably serial killers that had a more "normal" life....

I had a worse life than Fischar dick ever had, and I'm not a serial killer. He stated that he was glad his mother was out of his hair anyway, which makes it sound like he was hell to raise.

And how does this make anything I said false ?  What's your point ?

It would be cool to have a chess player on a coin, or more realisticly a stamp, but deffianitly not Bobby Fischer. He had his character flaws that should be forgotten, not honored on a coin.

My point is: He was allready an A-H before his mother left. That abuse excuse is over used. WAY over used.

And you know this... HOW ?  Did you ever meet Fischer ? I have read everything I can get my hands on about Fischer since the early 70s and have never heard reports about him being such an AH  ( as you claim ) anywhere. So, you are privvy to info that noone else is , including people who actually knew him and had regular contact with him ?  Impressive !

Isn't Paul Keres the only chess player to be honored by a stamp ever?  Thought I read that somewhere.

Why during those 20 years of inactivity didn't Fischer try to write a book about everything after My 60 Memorable Games, most notably his incredible championship run?  Also, as far as money, didn't he turn down a lot of endorsements?

Did you miss the part of the question where it said "how"?  You seem to have made up your mind up this without the evidence to support your conviction.  You might want to rethink how far down this rabbit hole you go.

Although it was previously known.

Fischer Random Chess.

I would not hold out for a coin, unless you want to pay the Franklin mint.

You gotta wonder in 10 years, perhaps a postage stamp.  There must be other anti Semite outlaws on U.S. stamps.

themothman

He went crazy, not sure if he gets a coin : ).   I think the government caused the problems, but that's just my opinion.

TheGrobe

Why does every Fischer thread degenerate into armchair psychiatry?  It's bad enough when it's a football game, but are you really in a position to give a diagnosis?

dannyhume

But he spat on that decree thingie of paper.  Paper I said.
