Given the massive amounts of poverty and the number of people starving to death in the world, I would say that for a good portion it is "untenable."
Massive poverty has been the case for lots of societies going back a long way. It has to do with inequal distribution of goods, not inability of the world's people to produce enough goods.

Poverty is also subjective and the American (as defined by the Feds) is not correct.
