The point is that society typically does not promote chess as an activity that girls should be interested in like ballet or makeup or gymnastics. Society in general promotes sports as less important to girls than social status or appearance; thus, more boys end up playing than girls, leading to a skill gap.

Girls have the same mental abilities as boys for chess; many just don't want to play chess unfortunately.
