What about an option in live chess where a draw offer while a player disconnects equals game canceling?
The idea is when you opponent disconnects in a non-lost or equal position, you offer a draw that is automatically accepted on abort so that he doesn't lose points due to technical problems with his connection. The game canceling means that after the draw neither player's rating would be affected.
