Bobby Fischer - 6'1"
Vladimir Kramnik - 6'5"
I visited the Sinquefield Cup playing site in St. Louis yesterday and saw the top 12 players in person (OK, Aronian and Nakamura aren’t CURRENTLY among the top 12 in FIDE classical ratings, but who’s going to argue against THEM?) and I was struck that ALL 12 men are below average height for men, several significantly so:
Nepo 5’7”
Naka 5’5”
Caruana 5’3” plus his afro
MVL 5’5”
Giri 5’8” (actually NOT a shrimp in the elite chess world)
Carlsen 5’7” plus his cockatiel hairdo
Karjakin 5’8”
Anand 5’7”
Ding Liren 5’6”
Aronian 5’6”
Mamedyarov 5’6”
So 5’7”
All six games were boring draws, so I had time to take notes on other things. Not information of critical importance to anyone, but it was a striking revelation.
Remind me of those pair. The guy on the right used to boast about being "the tallest dwarf in Europe"
I'm 5' 10.5" but, then again, I'm not much of a chess player.
Yeah, the KG is crap. I personally don't know what I fear the most, playing it or playing against it!
Or at least not tall?
Magnus Carlsen- 5'9
Garry Kasparov - 5'9
Aronian - 5'8
Liren - 5'8
Karpov - 5'7
La Grave - 5'7
Hikaru Nakamura - 5'6
Fabiano Caruana - 5'5
Micheal Adams - 5'5
