I visited the Sinquefield Cup playing site in St. Louis yesterday and saw the top 12 players in person (OK, Aronian and Nakamura aren’t CURRENTLY among the top 12 in FIDE classical ratings, but who’s going to argue against THEM?) and I was struck that ALL 12 men are below average height for men, several significantly so:

Nepo 5’7”

Naka 5’5”

Caruana 5’3” plus his afro

MVL 5’5”

Giri 5’8” (actually NOT a shrimp in the elite chess world)

Carlsen 5’7” plus his cockatiel hairdo

Karjakin 5’8”

Anand 5’7”

Ding Liren 5’6”

Aronian 5’6”

Mamedyarov 5’6”

So 5’7”

All six games were boring draws, so I had time to take notes on other things. Not information of critical importance to anyone, but it was a striking revelation.

Though he looks tiny in this pic!

I may be completely wrong but wasn't Vassily Smyslov in the 6' 5" range?

I'm 5' 10.5"  but, then again, I'm not much of a chess player.

All kind of possibilities are met:

Remind me of those pair. The guy on the right used to boast about being "the tallest dwarf in Europe"  grin.png

Yeah, the KG is crap. I personally don't know what I fear the most, playing it or playing against it!

Asmo2k

Was expecting this to be silly, but you're actually right lol

I'm 15 and 5 10.5, that explains why I'm average at chess.

My cousin who is really good at chess is about 6”4 and he is 18 :/

As long as you can see the board, you're good to go . . .

batgirl

It's not necessary to see the board to play chess.  But it is helpful for most of us.

m_connors

I need to see the board to play, but sometimes it's not that helpful, anyway. sad.png

Svidler is reportedly 6'5".

Grischuk looks taller than most super GMs in photos.
