Is it legal to take it before a high profile game?

I think it is a banned substance at major FIDE events. Never tried it but I wouldn't recommend messing around with that stuff.

Adderall is a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, two central nervous stimulants that improve focus and reduce impulsivity by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain.

Meaning, if you are rated 600 in rapid in chess.com you will certainly play like a 620.

No it doesn’t. I used to use Adderall recreationally, and it made me absolutely moronic at chess. I was all keyed up but had no ability to think about subtle, fine detail things. Your mileage may vary.

if drugs improved chess skill, I would be a super GM right now.

It would probably depend on who is taking the adderall. Adderall has a different effect on those who don't have ADD. Personally I prefer cannabis especially for classical games tongue.png

In my experience as someone with adhd it is massively performance enhancing and actually legal for me at all levels due to having an exemption. The benefit is also more notable than just 20 points of rating it is on a day where it's on the less effective end a 100 rating points but on a really effective day could be as high as 300 rating points gained and this is across all formats I play from blitz to classical over the board, it is probably the most performance enhancing drug you could consume before a chess game. For classical play specifically you'd want to be on a extended release such as aderall XR or elvanse/vyvanse because you want to maintain effect throughout the game.

Definitely yes

Adderall might feel like it helps with chess because it boosts focus, alertness, and working memory—but that doesn’t always mean better performance. For complex games like chess, too much stimulation can lead to overthinking or rushing moves. So while some players report sharper focus, others say it throws off their rhythm or creativity.
