...a little trivia question :

Two women, within a two year period, won the overall  chess championships (not the women's championship) of their respective states.

Who can name those two ladies?

Avatar of trysts

The "States" meaning the United States?

Avatar of batgirl

Precisely.  Like NY, GA, NC, NV, CA etc.

Avatar of trysts

That's a good question, because I can't easily Google it. So I'm going to guess that Irina Krush was one, and Jennifer Shahade was the other.

Avatar of batgirl

Nope... on both counts, but nice guesses.

This was back in the 1940's or 50's, correct?

Avatar of batgirl

Both in the 1950s

Avatar of trysts

Was one of them Mona May Karff?

Avatar of batgirl

Nope. But an interesting guess.

Mary Bain of Hungary was one?

Avatar of trysts

Okay, how about Gisele Gresser and Sonja Graf?

Avatar of Schachkaempfer

Come on, Batgirl, we are excited to know if the latest answers are correct.  Mary Bain.

Adele Rivero?

Avatar of trysts

This is really neat, because I'm learning about a lot of women who played in the 1950s;)

Avatar of batgirl

None of the above are correct but Adele Rivero, only she was Adele Belcher.

"Chess Life" May 20, 1954
Adele Belcher Tops in Vermont.
After a silence of some years Adele R. Belcher (Mrs. Donald Belcher), who will be better remembered by some as former U.S. Women's Champion Adele Rivero, returned to chess competition by winning the Vermont Chess Association State Championship ahead of a field of 12 male players which included three past State champions.  At the annual meeting, Mrs. Belcher was elected vice-president of the Vermont Chess Association.

Nancy Roos?

Not Gresser, not Karff, not Bain.

Appropriately enough, this player came from Morphy's town and her husband was also a strong player - in fact he organized the event in which she won the Louisianna State Championship.  In her day she was well known but today she is largely forgotten.
