Work on your tactics.

Chess Mentor and Tactics Trainer are good tools for this, and, if you can find it, "Winning Chess: How to Look Three Moves Ahead" by Chernev and Reinfield can help you identify basic tactical patterns and formulate basic plans using these patterns.

Some of what you are experiencing is simply that you must think out the possibilities of each move, and see what your opponent's best move would be.  Do this for all your moves, and for all the moves you expect to arise from your moves.  This should help you gain "foresight" in Chess, it worked for me, at least.

use the analysis board for every move you make

shadowslayer
I won't use things like analysis board because you can't do that in real chess so why sshould I now?

My advice is to learn the fundementals/principles better, then it will be easier to make plans further ahead. Go find a good book or DVD on chess principles and go from there if i was you....Cool

it dont happen overnight!

well.. If you get boring when watching games, if you dont like tu use analisys tools, if you dont like to read articles and if you cant visualize more than one or two move ahead... then maybe (just maybe) chess is not for you.

For the same reason athletes use heavier, tougher or just oddly shaped equipment when... training.  So when it comes time for the real thing they aren't struggling but instead seems easier because they've done harder things in practice.

right, except the analysis board makes things too easy and stops you from improving your ability to see ahead and visualise positions mentally in a real game.  Although if you are really struggling to make plans or get used to thinking about moves then perhaps it can help in this case.  My advice would be just dont move until you have a good move that you think does something.  If most of your moves are just throwaways then you are always going to struggle to make plans.  Dont develop your queen too early as then you also struggle since all your moves are moving the queen, and dont give up material unless you have a REALLY good reason ie if you can already SEE EXACTLY how you come out on top.  If I am a piece down then i'm not surprised to find i cant make any good moves at all, let alone plans requiring several moves and combinations.  Following on from this, perhaps you are looking for checkmates all the time, when a lot of my plans would be around picking up a weak pawn or trying to win material.  Then you can move on to trying to manipulate the position to your advantage like opening files and putting your rooks on them.  I also see you have played 1.e3 in a couple of games at least.  If you play 1.e4 you might find that a lot of the 'plans' make themselves.  You can actually get a decent rating on this site without having to ever have plans, simply hanging on to material and picking up anything that's offered seems to be enough for at least 1400 here.
