You are asking a very subtle, and difficult question! but a partial solution is at hand. There are three books which I found to be excellent in helping me get better, i.e. 1200 to 1600, but it will take at least a year of reading and practice everyday!! Here are the books:
The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played-Irving Chernev
Best Lessons of a Chess Coach-Sunil Weeramantry
How to Reassess Your Chess-Jeremy Silman
Read, practice, play both computers & humans whenever possible! There are other, advanced things to discuss but this should get you in the right direction.
