Do any of us know what this young man does for income stream?

1.  Does he teach?

2.  Does he lecture?

3.  Does he have endorsements of products?

My guess is:

no

very rarely

absolutely

That's what we're trying to predict.

Here's some relevant data, copied from wikipedia (but it was cited from a scource):

"Carlsen reportedly earned roughly US$ 1.2 million in 2012, the bulk of which was from sponsorships."

Avatar of AnOmalimusicofficial

I heard he usually makes about a million a year.

Fourteen dollars, 26 cents, USD.

Avatar of ChessinBlackandWhite

my guess is at least 2.5 million this year, he has actuall been mentioned several times in the non chess media, and the chess world alone will make him a lot in sponsorships

Avatar of netzach

Rumour has it Carlsen may make a loss during 2014 as has hired hit-man to crush palm beetles under a rock.

Avatar of ChessinBlackandWhite

No idea on specifics, he probably is less known. But he is known to a significant portion of the population

he is not as active now, and the world was not as global, so sponsorships would have made less sense in his prime

Avatar of macer75

It's said that Carlsen is pretty much a superstar in Norway - virtually everybody knows about him. So perhaps companies that earn a significant portion of their revenue in Norway would sign sponsorship deals with him?

Avatar of ChessinBlackandWhite

Lots of people recognize both their names, and a few million really isnt all that much in todays day and age

it means that even though he is from norway and almost never plays in the US people all over the world can follow his games live and therefor increase his exposure without him even having to be in the media

and media coverage being serious or not taken seriously, has little effect on money. If anything not being taken seriously would lead to more money today. I am not saying I agree, thats just the way the world works

He will earn at least 1million from being at worst runner up in the World Chess Championship

Avatar of ingridev

yes, he is very well-known in Norway. Everyone knows who he is.

2903 elo, make even more money, defend his world championsship and and take his revenge in the Norway Chess tournament in june.

Have watched Magnus Carlsen for over eight years now as very young player with potential.

He is very worthy and capable world-champion and hard to see who can displace him from that position as he is considerably better than anyone else.

Avatar of Idrinkyourhealth

i think... he won't make that much.

Avatar of ChessinBlackandWhite

But the fact it people do follow him

And there are clearly lots of people interested

As to the second point you must have not taken the time to read what I said since you are merely misconstruing my words

And your third point does not seem coherent either. Perhaps you need to think more before typing

Even is 5 percent of peolple know who either one is they will make plenty

Avatar of CHEMIX-School

I think he will fasten the grip as a rock solid and merciless player (even more than now) and by that be a safe and long term  (expensive but good) investment for sponsors. I think he already has a commercially protected name.

Palm_beetle, just read Wikipedia. Magnus models, has been offered movie spots by J. J. Abrams, and has a buttload of sponsorships. He'll make a fair amount of money this year, probably $2-3 million.

Does anyone really know if he has a modelling career or whether that was just a one time thing in 2010?

From what I can tell, it was a one time thing...so far. Seeing as how he was voted one of the sexiest men by Cosmo in 2013, it's not a stretch to think that he could get more offers.
