Post #52: Yeah... everyone, if you spent years being able to play chess really well but make the wrong face at one time, you just blew it.

It may sound strange but I don't think Anand is quite as modest as he seems. Almost, perhaps, but he can get critical. Like after the world championship when he said Carlsen wins because he likes games that are "as dry as dust." It's just that he sneaks in these comments when no one is expecting them and you almost don't notice. Sure, Carlsen made it clear he thought he outplayed Anand, but he did -- whenever he makes a comment, it's not based on excuses or "what could have been" -- if he loses he just blames himself for it, not the position type or luck or whatever.

It's not that big of a deal, but worth pointing out.

I loved Anand's comment on his six-move loss to Zapata at... Biel, was it? Classic.

Elubas

What did he say?

Here's the game, Zapata - Anand Biel 1988

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. Nc3 Bf5 6. Qe2 Black Resigns

"A few seconds later [after playing 5...Bf5] 6.Qe2 dawned on me, and Alonso as well was really shocked. I think he thought that a strong grandmaster could not play such a move, so he sat there calculating himself. And now I had the choice, which was to just make my move, play a piece down for another twenty moves so that none of these magazines could publish it as a miniature, and you don't need to be reminded for the rest of your life that you lost a game in six moves. But that would mean that my fellow players in the tournament hall might come by and notice that I'm a piece down and start laughing ... So I decided to go for Plan B, which was to resign and then get out of the hall as quickly as possible, so that nobody would notice. This worked successfully - for many days people thought I had agreed to a short draw with Alonso - a very short draw."

No, Anand is almost always polite... even when he's just lost a game in six moves.

The story behind that blunder is hilarious, as well.

I take it you are aware of the story behind 5. ... Bf5? Miles - Christiansen, 1987?

Another day  another Magnus Carlsen defeat . This inconsistency from Carlsen is very encouraging for Vishy Anand...what was Carlsen doing today with his Nd4 on his 3rd move ?! . It smacks of arrogance to play in such a cavalier fashion just because he is rated 200 pts higher than his opponent. That's right ... defeated today by a player who is rated 200 pts below Magnus !.

I dont expect Magnus to play anything but his usual grinding positional game against Vishy but if Magnus lets his arrogant side get the better of him amd he starts to play novelties all over the place then he will be in for a very difficult time against Vishy.

Unfortunately for Magnus it appears that he lacks the imagination to play a really attacking style of chess and it is probably better for him to stick with his plodding but effective style of positional play.

People just give Carlsen too much respect. He should have lost to Caruana, and Dragan Solak, in addition to his latest 2 defeats.

I think he is bored playing in the Olympiad.

Correct we could quite easily be looking at 4 defeats for Magnus within the space of a week !.

I give Carlsen a ton of respect, because he really deserves it. But I can admit he's having a bad tournament. He's not performing with the consistency that he is so known for. It is what it is. He needs to make sure he doesn't continue playing like this in his world championship match.

Heh, this is the most negative comment I have ever made about Carlsen's play probably :) Even here I will sneak in the fact that while Anand would in the last couple of years sometimes have whole years of bad/sub par tournaments, as if all he cared about was defending his title, Carlsen only has bad moments, not bad years :)

Yeah, it's just so likely that world number 1's by large margins will lack imagination.

Just like in politics, if you do one thing wrong you will forever have a bad reputation with people insistent on looking at people negatively.

Oh, and don't forget an earlier comment I made here: don't dare make the wrong face, because Yuri_K will then not like you!

Yay?

fabelhaft

"Carlsen only has bad moments, not bad years :)"

It also says something about how high the demands on Carlsen are. He is after all in the top ten of highest performance ratings in the whole Olympiad, ahead of #2 and #3 Caruana and Aronian, as well as Nakamura, Mamedyarov, Kramnik etc.

fabelhaft

The only player in the top ten to have done better than Carlsen in the Olympiad is actually Topalov, and all of them are there except Anand. Then it's another thing that a comparatively weak result must come sooner or later, Carlsen has been much more active than his predecessors after winning the title. He has played Zurich, Gashimov Memorial, Norway Chess, in Brazil, rapid and blitz World Championships, Norwegian league, Olympiad, and probably something else that I've forgot.

It's only Norway chess he didn't win, finishing second, and of course soon also the Olympiad. He did hold the first bord gold position with two rounds to go also here, and is still top ten over all boards, so it could have been worse.

Prime_Watermelon

You will probably find that many of the greats are not necessarily likable.  I admire what they do on the board, not necessarily what they do off of the board.

Zabadeus

'Anand' is both a name and a surname while Viswanathan is a patronymic name. I also heard he is not really Indian and rather boring , hardly trustworthy stuff.

Im very happy girl today, Magnus lose again.

Since i create this topic, Magnus has no win :)
