Well said!  Smile

Thanks for all of the new posts, some very good points were brought up.

Jesterville: I'm very glad that you brought up the financial side of Chess. Many years ago Fischer was able to force increases in the sizes of prizes given out for top Chess players. One thing about Carlsen that may help in the future is the " Hollywood  Connection ". Some time ago it was mentioned in " Chess Life " that Matt Damon had some Norwegian in his background thru his Mother. When background checks were made it turned out that Carlsen and Damon are 4th or 5th Cousins. There is a lot of money around in Hollywood and if new sponsors could be found thru interest in Carlsen then Chess would benefit by that.

Interesting stuff, cabadenwurt. Looks like success lies in the family.

cabadenwurt

Yes TheBigDecline, I gather that a few people felt there was a bit of a  similarity in the physical appearance of Carlsen and Damon and that was what lead to the background checks being done.

GreedyPawnGrabber

That's heartbreaking. Does he like you as well?

cabadenwurt

Well GreedyPawnGrabber it took you a while to get here. I've seen that you do not like Carlsen when you have posted in other threads ( any reason for your dislike ??? ).

thanks for the correction, mispelling sorry I was late and sleepy when I wrote down that!!

sorry, a tennis player

cabadenwurt

Thanks for the post Grandbrother.

The location that has been announced for the WCC match is in India. One might think that the heat in that area could be a factor but Carlsen is quite young and should be okay. Perhaps in the days right before the WCC match he could spend some time in the very southern part of Europe to help in getting used to being in hot temperatures.

Fixed that for you.

cabadenwurt

Thanks Blueemu, yes that is also a good idea. I'm not too fond of the very hot Weather and having high humidity makes it even worse.

Tongue Outthat was funny!!!!

I have a theory that Anand will have an advantage based on the location of the match against Carlsen.

World Cup soccer:-

          VENUE             WINNERS

1930 Uruguay              Uruguay

1934 Italy                      Italy

1938 France                   Italy

1950 Brazil                   Uruguay

1954 Switzerland          Germany

1958 Sweden                 Brazil

1962 Chile                     Brazil

1966 England                England

1970 Mexico                   Brazil

1974 West Germany      Germany

1978 Argentina              Argentina

1982 Spain                      Italy

1886 Mexico                  Argentina

1990 Italy                     Germany

1994 USA                       Brazil

1998 France                   France

2002 Japan / S. Korea     Brazil

2006 Germany                 Italy

2010 South Africa            Spain

So Brazil won it twice outside their own time zone but no one else did.

Of course Chennai is only 3 1/2 hours ahead of Oslo .....

cabadenwurt

Thanks for the posts.

Blackrabbitto: That is an interesting chart that you have there, I guess Carlsen could be in trouble. Smile

Thanks for that cute cartoon Jesterville. Yes soon the young Thor will be able to show if he is truly worthy, or not. Smile

jesterville

That cartoon was done by Jose Diaz after the Candidates ended. He is a prolific chess artist.

Another question has to do with opening preparation, an area that Carlsen is reported to neglect somewhat ( as did Spassky ? ). Thus, will in-depth opening preparation be a advantage for team Anand ?

cabadenwurt

It will also be quite interesting to see who Carlsen will choose as his Second for the WCC match in November. Will it be a GM that is especially strong in Chess Openings to help Carlsen in that particular area ?

cabadenwurt

Well I see that we have a thread on the go here that claims the Carlsen-Amand Match is in trouble. Carlsen is worried about the effects of the hot weather as well as the type of food that will be available. On the previous page I mentioned that Carlsen would need to get used to hot weather by visiting some southern parts of Europe ( perhaps do some hiking on the island of Sicily for example ? ). As for food I would imagine that canned goods as well as bottled water should be available in major cities in India. The location of the Match is set and Carlsen is the Challenger, it is a bit late to get " cold feet " now ( Chess fans the world over await the Match ).Smile

I like Magnus. I also like Vishy!

I think Magnus is definitely the future of the sport whether that future is now is another thing.

I think Vishy has been a very good World Champion for the game and all it's followers and I am looking forward to a great match between two great players.
