But there's no correlation between IQ and your ability to tie shoelaces either.
People with higher IQ's tend to be better at chess than those with lower one's, but that's only with people who play chess. My IQ is 133, above average but certainly nothing astronomical.

I don't know I think it does relate to your IQ, but just because your bad at chess does not mean you are stupid, but being good at chess reflects a stronger grasp of logic and intuitiveness so yea I think the two are linked somehow.
being good at anything relates to practice & comprehension. if you cant comprehend something no matter the amount of practice you will never understand it.
comprehension is related to iq. Speed comprehension gives high iq results, slow comprehension does not mean a worse chess player accept in timed games. so high iq score is only positively related to timed games. giving rise to the old saying "slow and steady wins the race".
The only reason that a high iq player would not be good at chess would be lack of practice. Practice is related to interest and priorities. It's hard to be good at anything when everyone is telling you to get a job and focus on anything but spending precious time playing games.
My intelligence tells me there's no point living without having fun on the way. chess is so much fun. Even losing is fun cos then I can get mad and smash things. lol
Chess, I believe, is a way to work out that musscle, like bench pressing. Does it make your IQ higher? No, but it will push you towards the upper limit of what your IQ is.
Chris
Any puzzle solving activity gets the synapses in your brain connecting, so playing chess regularly, learning to concentrate for long periods of time and doing the additional learning you need to improve your rating will have a positive impact on your IQ.
I'm teaching my kids to play (they are 7 and 5). My son thinks a bit more logically and is learning very quickly. He's more mathematically oriented than my daughter. She is more imaginative and is making links between moves quicker (but still struggles with the knight).
We're also getting them to learn music which apparently has a similar effect.
Interesting..... My experiment shall continue....
i dont agree with taking Internet and television tests to measure IQ though. THe television IQ tests are so simple, it is hard to score below 147.
Oh yes. It's Official. Your average chess player is much smarter. Your average none chess playing person on the street is dim by comparison. They tend to grunt when they speak, and immitate monkeys, but chess players have more complex thought patterns. In a recent study, posted in the Journal of proven science, they found that your average none chess player thinks about things like twinkies and telytubbies while your average chess player can grasp the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. None Chess players spend every waking hour jealous of their higher IQ chess playing colleagues.
According to my latest IQ test I am well above average. BUT, I am NOT a good chess player and have a lot to learn. So much for IQ.
I go to the pub and have a chessboard in front of me
I'm the smartest and most interesting person there
until someone challenge me ...
Apparently we share 66% of our DNA with House Flys and Bananas. The average IQ however, is related to the peanut. Most humans are similar in comparison.
has anyone here ever taken an IQ test?
it is mostly shape and pattern recognition.
if you dont think chess can develop this skill in a child, you should neither be playing chess or have children.
yeah, i said that
Try the following link : www.auschess.org.au/articles/chessmind.htm
The above link concludes with many many studies supporting the thesis that chess is highly beneficial in the development of the child's mind.
I created a thread some time ago regarding the I.Q of Grandmasters. It transpired that most people who weighed in with a comment had the opinion that high ability at chess [even GM level] is not directly correlated with intellectual ability, but rather indicated too much time spent honing ones skill.
Such opinions indicate to me a certain contempt for the game of chess, and even more so for those who excell at it.
On another note, the Open Forum contains a thread called 'Political Compass'. I would really like to see many more members have a go at the 10 minute questionaire and state their "political quadrant" [it will make sense once you've done the test!]
chess is about creativity and chances and risks and calculations. if your good at all four you have something. doesnt mean u can build a rocket ship to outer space! or complete the hardest of math computations.
First of all there is a slight correlation between IQ and chess ability, but it has a lot of other factors too. It is common belief among scientists that the difference between a GM and an amature is the amount of different moves and combinations the GM has memorized.
Memory is often quite dependent on IQ therefore chess ability is dependent on IQ... however this doesn't mean someone with a low IQ couldn't be a GM and this doesn't mean someone with a high IQ couldn't be poor at chess.
What it really tells us is the average IQ of GMs compared to the average IQ of the whole population is probably higher, so if the average of the ENTIRE population is 100 than the average of ALL the GMs might be 115 or 120.

OH and on a side note, someone said they were a part of mensa, mensa requires a yearly subscription, GIVE ME A BREAK! "Yeah your smart, now give us your money!".
