Josh Waitzkin's resignation from competitive chess

shame he quit i saw  a couple of his lectures on a chessmaster chess cd he is a very good teacher. so if you cannot make it to the top use your other skills  don,t just up and quit. he had skills to offer the chess world if he truly loved the game. I guess he did not if he just walks away. YOU all know not everyone can be a 2700 or above player. no matter how hard they work. some just have that extra amount of talent to get to the top. lets  look at grandmaster roman in the 90,s ranked 4th in the world! things did not go to the world title for him but he did not quit. this man went on to become a very good teacher  to the best players in the world not to mention videos he and karpov made and teach much to this day, these are players who love the game and give their all to it! shame he quit

Well I see that someone has started yet another thread on this subject ( a Note to Chess fans: Josh has left the building !   ---   get over it people ! ).

BlargDragon

But... if we're not obsessing over what others do with their lives, what will we fill our own lives with?

Leela_03

I dont obsess with others lives, but they are interesting....my life is more interesting to me......lol!

Cripes man! The thread is 7 years old!!!!!!!!!!!!

Odd that you should mention the phrase: " 7 years old !!!!!!!!!! ". Josh has been away from Chess for a number of years now but some people are still quite upset   lol. That was my whole point in my post, he is gone, he has left, he has said adios, he has abandoned competitive Chess, he is no longer active in Chess, etc etc ( people please keep calm and do try to get over it   rofl ).

Sorry but I think Josh has more insight into why he left that you or anyone else on chess.com. We can analyze and read into it all we want. But it's really not fair to him (and rather disrespectful) to say that he really quit because of this or that. Or that he was wrong in the way he perceived Dvoretsky's approach to teaching him. Dvoretsky could obviously be a great teacher or not. But regardless, if his style is the reason Josh quit then it was a bad one in relation to Josh. Not really much to discuss.

Very insightful post.

If Josh didn't like his coach, why didn't he just get a new one instead of quitting?

He is one of many strong and promising players to leave chess when he realized his further progress would be incremental and he would never be a world-class player.  He was talented, but far less so than the current juniors in the USA.

I agree.

In my country, the Chess Fed will pay RM1 million(around USD250,000) for the first person who got GM title. unfortunately, the only IM that's capable of doing so also quit chess and continued his life with normal days in the office. I'm not sure why. but I think the love for chess decreases as people get older.

Josh Waitzkin is a loser, with limited chess ability. For some reason he fit the mould of what a couple of trainers thought a chess champion should be like - obviously being Jewish and American had a lot to do with it - and they invested hugely in him with some of the best trainers in the world intensively coaching him.

And it turns out he was shit. He scraped a respectable rating in the end, obviously he could beat any of us... but that's not saying much. All hype and all lies, nothing to do with Bobby Fischer at all. Like someone on American Idol supposed to be the next Whitney Houston.

Instead of acknowledging failure he went on to market like a cheesy snakeoil salesman, promising all sorts of things and running away with the money. A total joke now.

It's too bad Dvoretsky ruined him. As I understand it, he was on his way to becoming the next Bobby Fischer of the USA.

He was a strong player, but "the next Bobby Fischer"? Yeah, I wouldn't bank on that.

Of course this perception of him as "the next Bobby Fischer" is, no doubt, mostly because of his father's dubious choice of title for his book (and the subsequent film).

---   Let me see if I can follow this " interesting " post. Josh made it to best Under-18 player in the USA ( Btw the USA has a large population, over 300 million, lots of players ). Then he also made it thru several levels of titles to achieve the rank of an IM ( only one step short of a GM title ). Having reached those levels makes him a loser with limited Chess ability ( and he was s**t ??? ). Please do us a favour pal and get back on your Meds   rofl.
