He is four time world chess champion--no one else has this resume--the question is this--is he using performance enhancing cheat codes like Mikhail Tal and Barry Bonds used?
I knew Fabiano Caruana would win and all of my past predictions have come true--I am never wrong. Something must be askew with Magnus.
Carlsen has defended his title 3 times. He is not a 4 time champion.
He beat Anand in 2013 to win the championship - First time champ
He beat him again in 2014 - 2 time champ
He beat Karjakin in 2016 - 3 time champ
He beat Caruana in 2018 - 4 time champ.
At least that is the way I learned to count when I was 3.
But you could argue that Carlsen hasn't proven he is the best classical chess player in the world since 2014. He didn't prove it against Karjakin or Caruana.
A 4 time champion would be someone that won, and then lost the title more than once.
That's an interesting way of looking at it. I think it would be 4 time champion. Every time there is a championship, and a winner, I think of that person as the winner, even if they are the defending champion. The only way I can think of where that wouldn't apply is if all the opponents forfeited, then it wouldn't really be winning and it would just count as one long championship tenure, not two separate ones. If someone wins 4 times, I count it as 4 times. Regardless if they are consecutive or not. Brooks Koepka is a two time US Open champion, even though it was consecutive wins.

Yes I suppose it could be used in that slightly different context as well. But a 4 time Superbowl champ won it 4 times, consecutive or not doesn't matter. Amazing the things we can pick apart on the internet!

Yep. it is nit picking. And at the end of the day it means squat. Its just how someone views something.

I think its safe to assume that MC has been the best for quite a while as he has been number one rated for an eternity in tournament games.
Match games however - I think could be different. The recent WC matches have shown me that there isn't really much to show between these >2700 players. Maybe a point or so difference between MC and say Shak or So or some other top 10 player over a 12 game match.
Looks like you did not read the whole thing. He used the cheat codes on himself to win.
My point was that the original post really only asked if he cheated. To "use cheat codes" is something one does when playing a computer game - one inputs a code into the game to make it easier. So that's something one would do to one's opponent - use a cheat code so the chess program is playing according to a lower level than it seems to be.

Vishy is 5-times World Champion.
Since we are debating semantics in this thread, Vishy is a 5-time champ; not a 4-time champ. So would it really be honest for him to put on his resume that he is a 4-time champ? Are there any other true 4-time champs out there? I am not sure actually. The OP may be in the clear on this one.
Barri Bonds cheated?
Thats obvious...
