Andrew,expect everyone to be rude and obnoxious on a good day, I think it is human nature. When you show respect for that person, it is only for your benefit, as it underlines the fact that you are a better person for it.
It takes a subtle sense of knowing yourself to be polite - especially when you are dealing with total rudeness. Try and see how irate you can make the respondent, then sit back and laugh !
