Nigel Short 1. d4?

So I have pouring over chess games on chessgames.com and TWIC and the like looking for players who play my favorite openings.  I have been keenly interested in the French Defense as black, and specifically players who play it along with 1. d4 as white.  Today I noticed that Nigel Short, whom I already knew played the French Defense, opened exclusively (I think) with 1. d4 at Gibraltar, where he previously was chiefly a 1. e4 player.  Thoughts?

I read in one of the newspapers here that he was playing several new openings, and judging by his performance in Gibraltar, where he lost to Ivanchuk, drew another game and won eight, it's given him a new lease of life.
