I still don't understand why people think that Fisher would be #1.
He was popular - yes. Was he domineering chamption like Karpov or Kasparov???
In order to be considered #1 you have to prove that you are #1. He had a chance to do it but walked away early in his career!
Gazza and Karpov dominated ,and had an aura of invincibility, just like EVERY world champion had....including Fischer....Fischer had that aura from around 65' onwards...When Fischer walked away there was nothing left to prove...he'd surpassed everyone and everything ,in Chess....
