Viktors Pupols....Won Bobby Fischer on Time

....and an active player up in the Pacific NW.

Could he be the only man left alive today who won Bobby Fischer ?

What do we know of him ?

We know that Bobby only lost two games EVER on time....one to Biktors.

Victors played the bewildering 2...f5 !!

....and won BF whether he had a year or a minute on his clock ! 

The only reason I even read this is because I recognized the name. In my former life before marriage and kids I played a couple tournaments in Portland. I dont remember anything specific about him, other than he seemed a lot more serious than me.

Pal Benko is still alive was 3-8-IDK against Bobby....and so is Boris Wassky....& Fredrik Olafsson....& Boris Ivkov.

I see Viktors twice a year in Reno.  Very nice man, and tells a great story, and lymric.

Oh Viktors LOL. I'm 0.5-1.5 against him in OTB

But I guess that doesn't mean much considering I'm currently 0-7 against one of my former coaches that has a very similar rating to mine.

I'm on-n-off working on a complete list of players who won BF who are still alive today. If anyone wants to add to the list ?....pleez do so.

In the late 1970s, at a Class Tournament in Chicago, I was impressed walking past Pupols post mortem analysis with his opponent.    his opponent queried.  "do you always play chess like this ?"    Pupols "what do you mean?"    opponent "crazy chess !!"    Pupols then quipped "I am an artist.   The chessboard is my canvas.    you are part of the paint !"

I would rather lose in a bewildering game than win a bore....really ! My only prereq is that I had played imbalanced, surprizing chess.
