A very unlucky person, he had amazing results in the 1900s and early 1910s but couldn't get the money together to play Emmanuel Lasker in a WCC match, when he eventually did, WW1 got in the way of him playing Lasker and never got a shot of being WCC. After which his results were good but began to decline probably from the knowledge that he could never be the WCC.

He also went, for lack of a better term, a bit insane. After making his move he would hide in corners awaiting his opponent's reply. Some report (although there is little evidence and I could be getting him confused with someone else) that he believed he was playing dead people and provided the moves and that he was playing a game of chess vs god and he had a better position vs god.

Also after WW2 he went more insane, probably due to the fact he was a Polish Jew and it is unknown exactly how he survived WW2.

He could still play chess relatively well though and was trying to write a book that in the QGD symmetry is the best option for black, but died before he could even get close to finishing it.
